Well when you talk about the SIR and he M73 it's kind of like apples and oranges.
They mount to the rifle much different. One mount to the upper receiver rail (SIR) allowing to "free float". The other is a 2 piece deal that is mounted to the barrel nut and handguard cap (M73). Different ends of the spectrum in price also. The SIR comes in two versions; military (which means your must remove the delta ring assembly) and civilian which you can retain the delta ring.

There is pros and cons to both but in the end, you will decide what fits you best. The M73 is a good choice if $$$ are tight. The SIR is expensive and would break some banks.
I have the SIR #46C ans I love it. I also have a RAS similar to the M73 made by Yankee Hill. Same basic design (2 piece RAS) mounted on my patrol rifle. The M73 would be a good choice for those on a tight budget and buying a platform like this for the first time. Whatever you decide, have fun with it.

My SIR RAIL is tough as nails.  I can't give an opinion on the other, but it does not look like you can throw it into a foxhole.....jump in after it......and begin to use it!!!!

For my money give me the "tough as nails one"
