I used the search and really didnt come up with much.

I was thinking about a foregrip, but unsure about mounting. Do I only have one option to mount the grip on m4 handguards?

I did an internet search and found this pic. I could see the screws holding the rail on, but what are the screws screwed too? Any info suggestions or comments welcome.

Thanks

Edited to add: Is it stable like this?

Several companies make these bolt on rails. They screw to another "rail" on the inside of the handguards. They are not stable enough for optics, but will work with lights, lasers, and grips. Be sure you get one that is made "to spec" so your stuff mounts to it correctly. A lot of the cheap knock off types are not to "spec" which means they aren't the right size, and your stuff may not mount securely or at all.

The GG&G you show is a good one.

I recently went that route and had the rail mounted to the bottom of my handguards. It is very solid and I have my grip mounted to it.  Like mention previously, its great for grips and lights but I would not suggest and type of optic on it.  Its a good alternative from buying a whole new set of railed handguards.  Installation takes less then 5 min.  Just remove the bottom guard and 3 screws later you are done.

Forgot to mention earlier and please someone correct me if I'm incorrect.  I believe they make 2 diff types of rails.  One for the standard guards and for the oval M4 guards.  Thats what I was told at a gunshow.  So make sure you order the correct one.

If your looking for a low cost way to go, this is the setup I have on both of my COlt M4's

Pro-Mag Vertical Grip    8.99   @    www.Cabelas.com    #IF-227385

MX Acc. Mount  Rail     14.99   @    www.Brownells.com  #100-002-035

The Rail screws go through the factory vent holes and into backing nuts made for this exact application!!

I have this setup on both my Single & Double Heatshield Handguards!!
The top & bottom of both types of M4 Handguards are flat! the MX Rail fits both types perfectly!!

Around $35 total w/shipping for Grip & Rail !!

Very inexpensive way to go...., for a very soild setup!!

Instead of doing an add-on rail the better (and stronger) solution would be to get a set of Fobus M33 handguards.

With a single set you can add a rail to the bottom of 2 carbines (replace the lower handguard on each carbine with the Fobus).  Should you want to remove the VFG, you install the snap on rubber cover and the handguard will look (and feel) like a standard handguard (no dealing with that screwed on rail).

Picture of a M3 with VFG and light.  Note how the M33 handguard mates up with the standard upper handguard.

Picture of another carbine with a M33 lower handguard.  In this photo the owner had cut away the front portion of the rubber cover so he can attach his light to the rail - but still have a comfortable handguard to grip.

So you were able to bolt it on under the Colt double heat shield without drilling or removing the heat shields? I am contemplating the same thing before plunking down a couple hundred or more on a decent rail system.

I will probably go this way. All I really want to add is the vert grip. I do like that m33 handguards, but more than I want to spend right now. Hey wreckdiver I added some links to the quoted area that ru4freedom posted. According to the product specs you can bolt it all on without removing the handguards.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and comments. Much appreciated!!!

WHITE_WOLF,

Thanks for posting the active links....., but your Cabela's link goes to a Simmons Scope!

The really strange thing is that I just got off the phone from giving a friend that exact Cabela's scope number in 4-12x40mm as a suggestion  for his CZ 452 .22 Mag.

wooooooooooooo.........scary!!

Yes...., I just oiled the backing bolts a bit and worked them down in between the two heat shields with a slightly bent piece of welding rod.  It took a little finesing..., but worked out well!   Just make sure the backing bolts fit the holes easily before you do this, and that you slide them in with the proper side down, as one side is resesed to drop into the hole.  I had to slightly inlarge one of the holes on mine!

You'll like it........, it's a nice compact & sturdy setup!!

The Grip is the same one that TAPCO sells for $17 + shipping

No cheesy side mounted set screw, it mounts firmly to the rail by twisting the knob on the bottom!!

I was wondering,  what advantages does the vertical grip have over regular hand guards? I was wondering,  because I've never used one and was thinking about getting one.

I'm not an operator, but I do play one on TV. j/k

I've got some wrist damage, and it really helps if you're going to carry or shoot for long periods, to turn the wrist in a less-stressed position.  Apparently, if you're wearing body armor like I do when I go to the range with my friends, or into the woods to make pop cans dance, your body should turn more facing the target.  A VPG helps here too.

I used a set of M33 handgaurds. If you are going to mount any type of scope ect on them I wound not use them. If all your going to run is a light and or a fore grip they work great. I bought 1 set  to made two sets. Used the top 1/2 of M33 and lower 1/2 of standard handgaurd to make a set.

My two cents

I think that might have something to do with your cache on your computer, because when I click on the link it doesnt even give me a part. I get no part found. If anyones uses the link copy the part # before you click it and paste it into the left and it will bring up the grip.

Also I looked on Brownells and found what appears to be the same grip, but its like $35 bucks. Looks exact to me. Just an FYI. Much cheaper if ya follow the link!!!

Better muzzle control, less stress on the wrist (as already pointed out), and VFGs don't get hot like handguards do when you're shooting prestigous amounts of ammo.

When I first got into ARs that was my setup, but it didn't last because of the flex of the handguards bothered me.  YMMV

What do you mean flex of the handguards?

The two-piece plastic handguards cannot be as resistant to twisting forces as a single-piece aluminum freefloat/rail

Agreed, but how much flex we talking about?

I do not care for free floats, so I can only think of one other option if I dont like this. That would be this!!

Check it out here!!! Anyone have this?

White_Wolf,

The YHM 2 piece handguards are the shizzle. WAY more secure on the rifle than adding a rail to a stock plastic handguard. I tried that, but my M4 handguards rotated a bit (it's natural I'm told) and the VFG makes torquing the lower handguard much easier (read: flex them out of shape). I went with the YHM for $109 from BrightFlashlights and love em. Have a TangoDown VFG and a Surefire G2 on the rails. No movement from them when installed and the delta ring keeps the set tight against the barrel nut teeth. Nothing but kudos for YHM and their product.

I have those on my M4gery.  They are very good if you don't mind a little extra weight (about 4oz more than the plastic handguards).  I also got mine from Brightflashlights.

There is another option (similar to the YHMs) now being sold by Bravo where the rails are solid (they don't have the lightening slot down the middle).

I want to add something to my rifle but thats my biggest concern is weight.  Which of these options is the lightest?

Lightest has to be the first way I am going to try. Use the mount from Brownells and the vert grip from cabellas. I got the mount today and will probably have the grip first of the week. When I get it all on I will post a pic and what I think about it.

I keep wondering how many people actually use their VFG to torque their muzzle down in rapid fire....

Torque: twisting force.  Muzzle forced up, VFG is pulled down and back = twisting moment acting on the handguards.  The axis is right-left,  not vertical.

Sorry, but you're ALL victims of Physics.  Just accept it.
