| My dad bought a ar-15 today. It has an a1 upper( traingle forend, non elevational adjustmet on the rear sight, no forward assist) but it has an a2 flash supressor. The lower has the markings colt ar-15 a2 cal 223 and sporter 2. the serial num is ser. sp301428. Also instead of the sights being noral like on todays a2's the peeps are like small and even samller than the 2 on new guns. The end of the barrell says c mp 5.56 nato 1/7 it also has a bayonet lug. Any idea on what we have???? |
The lower is a Colt Sporter SP1 or SP2? made after 1978 and before 1994 (judging by the serial number). It sounds like someone pieced together a rifle. Not exactly rare. |
Without the FA that is |
My pic is famous ! Sporter LW on the left with aftermkt stock and flash hider, 2 HBAR's in the middle, and the Sporter II on the far right |
See if you have all all black buffer with an orange tip on it! www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=29&t=147528 |
No, If I saw a gun like that, even knowing it isn't all origional, I would snap it up in a heart beat. I saw a gun like that in origional condition for 1000 at a recent gunshow. I would say that 625 is a great price if it is almost origional. I think that if the barrel, bolt, and upper are clearly Colt, it's a great deal. Plus, I love the slab side look. I wish I had one Couch-Commando

The guys are correct. It's a Colt's AR-15 A2 Sporter II. I have one in the 304XXX ser.# range. It was a transitional model. It has A2 type buttstock, pistol grip, and handguards. The hand guards on your's were replaced with old style A1 hand guards. That is the only difference I can tell from your post. It has an A2 1/7 r.o.t. barrel with an A2 flash suppressor. In original configuration this is not a heavy barrel, but a standard govt. A-2 1/7 twist light under the hand guards but heavy in front of the FSB, which has the A2 front sight post. Heavy barrel Colt rifles are marked Hbar on the barrel, and some models on the receiver roll marks as well. The upper is M-16 or M-16 A1 pattern. Mine has no forward assist or shell deflector. Nor does the lower have a fence around the mag release button or the detent channel. The specific Colt's model # for this rifle was R6400. Mine was mfg. 1984 or early 1985. Some referrence works don't even include this model. It's typical good Colt quality. Some sellers will try to tell you that this is a very rare model, but that's bull. It is probably NOT a pieced together rifle from 281sohc's description(and Assualt Rifler's pics?). The one it the pic has a forward assist, but no shell deflector. The 6400 model was made with some rifles having the forward assist and some without, but having F.A. does not preclude that it's an R6400. Nor does the presence of the forward assist of the lack of it date it as an early 6400 or a later one. Colt had a lot of perfectly good slick-sided M-16 uppers left at that time and also had a some M-16 A1 uppers left. By 1983 they were making the M-16 A2 uppers for the military. They weren't going to just trash them so they were used on some Sporter II models until the supply was used up. Some of these uppers include the milled recess for an auto sear, most don't.(edited here as I typed it backwards the first time) Mine also had an orange tipped buffer, but they were interchangable with the red tipped buffers. See Blake Stevens and Edward Ezell's book The Black Rifle to confirm my post. This is an invaluable referrence book, along with The Black Rifle II if you are into Colt's. From the sound of it, in that condition and for that price you certainly did NOT get ripped off. Good deal. This one was my first Colt's AR-15. Now I have 6 more Colt's and 1 ArmaLite AR-10. HTH |
