Are some A2 buffer tubes better than others or are they pretty much all the same.

The three I've dealt with have all pretty much been the same, they just varied in how old they were (one was with an old A1 stock)

EDIT: Just to be safe, though, I'd get one from a big name manufacturer. A CYA-type thing.

just asking because I used vice grips to take mine off and messed up the nut in the back. I can still get it on tight though. Maybe I should just leave it. What do you think?

As long as it's still straight, and you didn't come anywhere near touching the threads in the end, it should be fine.......ugly, but fine.

A 5/8" open end wrench is used to tighten and loosen the buffer tube. You may want to repair any corrosion protection that the vice grips removed.

If it's a .mil Colt buffer tube, it was made from a forging and will cost you a pretty penny or two to replace.

Nope not forged. I used a smal file to even out the nut so it doesn't look like crap. I used the birchwood casey touche up pen to paint the area. I hope it holds up.
