My choices would be 1.KAC 2.Surefire.
KACs are supposidly hard to get right now because of the war effort, and KAC having a nasty habit of robbing peter*civilians* to pay paul*uncle sam*. They make top quality stuff, non the less...I think they have some trouble because they are a small outfit, as far as DOD contractors go anyway. The Surefire shows real promise, and is worth looking into if it is availible to civilians.
I also like the Finnish can that was developed for the Valmet and is distributed by Gemtech? It fits over the barrel and only adds something like an inch to the weapon. That might be one to look into.

.223 Suppressor Comparison

Advanced Armament www.advanced-armament.com will provide you the best 5.56 silencers you can buy.

If you want a can that will directly mount to the 1/2 x 28 mm threads on your barrel get the Ranger.

I personally suggest one of the following.

The new Omni silencer will attach to a standard A2 flash hider.  You will have to call them and ask about this specific model as it is not list on their web site currently.  With this model you will not have to use a proprietary mount to gain the benefits of a quick detach feature.

The M4-2000 which I personally own uses a quick detach mount that take around two complete turns in order to attach.  The QD feature is ideal if you do not like removing the current flash hider or you want to move the silencer from rifle to rifle.  This model is currently the quietest model on the market with Gem-tech's M4-96D close behind.

KAC's 5.56 suppressor is virtually unobtainable and Surefire does not currently sale there silencers to civilians due to California Law.  I know of a local dealer who is "supposed" to have on order a couple of Surefire's suppressors on order, we will see.  What I will say about Surefire's is that they only offer 28Dbs of sound reductions which is very poor by today’s standards.  GemTech and Advanced Armament both blow that out of the water.

Of course this is only if you want the facts and not speculation. This is a real good forum that is relatively new, but there are several industry professionals on the board as well as some documented testing to base your decisions on.

Just note that original tests on this website were done linear. He's now switched to mil-spec "A" weighting, which will definitely change the order of the lists. The suppressor comparison that I posted a few posts above used mil-spec test methods.

I did not know suppressors could be imported for sale to civilians. You speak with authority, you must have a lot of experience with these suppressors. I’ve only ever read a little bit about the surefire and have a few gleaned pics, I’m very curious to hear more about it and that Finish suppressor you’re talking about.

As for me, I only have experience with the AAC M4-2000, the AWC Raider, the SWR SpecWar and my little Gemtech M4-96C as far as M16 type suppressors go. Of those four, they all seemed very comparable. They were all well built, held up to much full-auto fire and as far as I know today, have never given their owners any kind of problems. I went with the Gemtech product over the others because I could get it for a few bucks less and it had the six extra cool lookin little holes in the front end (j/k that was something I thought was cool, but not a deciding factor). Really though, I’d met Dr. Dater and Kel from Gemtech, loved their product and liked them, they seemed to have a great attitude about everything and an excellent product. To this day, I am very happy with my little Gemtech can.

One thing I would change and recommend you consider is getting a QD type suppressor and not a thread-on unit. I’m very happy with my thread on suppressor, but wish it was a QD can now that I have it and it pretty much stays on one rifle. I understand that it is my decision to keep the can on one weapon, but it just seems silly to more it from weapon to weapon and keep taking flash hiders (especially indexed A2 units) off and replacing them. So now, if I want to shoot a suppressed arf, I have to take out my semi-dedicated suppressed weapon. If I just had a QD suppressor and the coupling unit/flash hider on a few different rifle I would have a lot more flexibility. That said, I’d like to get a second 5.56mm/223cal QD type suppressor this year, and it’s probably be another Gemtech unit.

Gemtech or AAC.

BOTH very high quality units.

I've used several Gemtech models on ARs, MP-5s, and the HK USP.  All very nice.

I've also used the AAC UZI can.  VERY nice.  Every bit the equal to, or perhaps slightly superior to, the Gemtech.

Either company will do you fine.

+1.  Have also heard good things about both of these products.

I will admit, though, that I was hoping for a different discussion when I read "Good cans?"

According to recent specifications shown on Surefire's website, it has a reduction of 28 dB which is adequate, but not great considering that the big-name manufacturers are getting 33-35 dB reductions.

KAC is bigger than Colt.  They have a 250,000 square foot production facility with its own landing strip and hangar.  Probably alot stronger financially.

They ship 15,000 M4 rail systems to the military every month.  That is just one of their products.  One thing is for sure, they aint small.

I am sold on the M4 2000.  Nice people too.

I am most impressed with the quality, performance and customer service of Gemtech.
We sell others on occasion, but these are the ones we keep in stock.
+1 on a bi-lock over threaded.
You don't have to wear a Nomex glove to make sure it is secure.
