I'm about to do a Norrell's job and would like to have some Methyl Ethyl Ketone to "test" the finish when I'm done, not to mention to clean the airbrush.

I didn't see anything at Home Depot today, so I was wondering if there's another suggestion for where to find the stuff.  Something tells me they don't sell it online.

Just use industrial acetone.  I do for Norell's and it works fine.  You can get it at most any auto parts store.  MEK is much nastier stuff too.

Try methyl propyl Ketone. MPK
Works just as good and not as harsh on the Ozone layer.

+1 - MEK is used in fiberglass work so you can also find it at auto parts stores.

Use acetone. MEK is really nasty stuff. Acetone will clean out your airbrush just fine. I have a $30 cheapy airbrush that i keep cleaned out after use with acetone.

As others have stated, MEK is bad juju. It is readily absorbed into the skin and will give you Kooties.

When we need MEK in a pinch we go to any paint stores and you should have no problem with it.  Also stores like Ace hardware will have it too. Home Depo if they have it will give you a hard time about it.  Some states limit how much you can buy at one time to one gallon or less.

Make shure you use good rubber gloves.  The doctor style latex gloves don't do a thing for MEK and Vinyl gloves will be gone in seconds. Make shure you use the right filters on your respirator too.  Your MSDS sheets you get with it will explain better on what PPE to use.

Also something to note that MEK will eat gaskets and O-rings.

are you trying to make a meth lab???

MEK is very nasty stuff.  In large enough Quantity it could turn you into a Zombie.  Several members here store thousands or rounds for just such situations.  For that reason alone, I would go with the acetone.  Even then, a little wil go a long way.

Do not run "rubbing alcohol" through your airbrush to clean it or use it to dilute or thin Moly Resin™

in_burrito,

I have applied Norell's sucessfully and had not trouble whatsoever simply sticking to high strength acetone.  It will throughly degrease any metal and it is a substance your body actually makes in small quantites.  MEK is evil stuff.

To clean my airbrush, I clean the bottle with acetone and clean the nozzle by running straight air thru it for about two minutes.  I have never had a problem doing this.

Respect your liver, try the acetone.
