I would like to put an eleven rib panel on my top handguard but I don't want to remove my ARMS 40 and lose zero. Is the bracket screw that fits the rear clamp absolutely necessary? The HG's are very tight without the screw and I don't plan on mounting optics from the HG's.
Just checking to be sure that no damage will occur if the screw is left out.
TIA!

The screw simply clamps the handguard to your barrel nut.  The handguard is actually pretty stable without it because it also locks into the grooves of the barrel nut and is tensioned against the handguard cap.  I would think you'd be fine without the screw.

Just what I wanted to hear, thanks.
I hate to sound lazy but I really didn't want to zero the sights again.

I was able to use an 11-rib panel on the top with the screw in place. Make sure the screw is down far enough for the panel to slide. Also the benefit of the RAS M4 handguards is you can remove them without unmounting your optics or rear sight. I've done this a couple of times and all you need to do is just remove the handguard and apply the top panel.

I would tighten the screw only because it will give you more of a solid mounting rail system then without.

1. Take the RAS upper section off your rifle.

2. Take out the screw completely.

3. Put the 11 rib panel on the RAS.

4. Put the RAS upper section back on.

5. Slide the 11 rib panel forward, exposing the screw hole.

6. Install the screw.

7. Slide the 11 rib panel back so it locks in place.

8. Done.
