1) I know this varies, but what is a good estimate of rounds I will get from an out of the box gun before something needs replaced.

2) Secondly, should I buy a feild repair kit, or is this a waste of money.

Im more interrested in the answers to the second question. Thanks.

tens of thousands

no--you can buy extra parts, but i would not expect to use em too soon

stick to USGI mags and quality ammo and maybe an extra bolt assembly

There are few AR parts that "just wear out" in any short space of time or after any reasonable number of rounds fired.  You may need to replace a small spring here or there (extractor springs seem to need some attention after a-long-while), but unless you're in the sandbox after the bad guys, you shouldn't need to have a bunch of spare parts on hand.

I usually keep a few spare parts in the range bag, but nothing special.  A few gas rings, a spare extractor, a couple of assorted springs and a firing pin. (if it doesn't fit in the G27 pistol grip, it doesn't go)  You're much more likely to need a cleaning kit than spare parts.  FWIW, even with the overgassing problem I told you about, I got over 2.5K rounds through my rifle before the extractor rim cracked.  Don't worry--your new rifle is gonna be fine...It's Black Rifle Disease that costs the big money, and it's usually a bunch of crap that we don't really NEED....just crap we  WANT REALLY BAD

ETA:  USGI mags are US Govt Issue M-16 mags.  They won't work in our rifles.  Stuck with DPMS or ridiculously expensive SR25 mags

What do you mean USGI mags won't work in your rifle?

This is AR-15 discussion, he does not specify that he is talking about an AR-10, though that is referred to in his screen name.

i was referring to a .308, colt45guy already knows that cause he has already helped me with a few other things. Sorry for not specifying. I guess my problem is, I see everyone on here with all these problems and broke parts, and I just spent 1400 dollars on a rifle. Granted this is a forum to fix problems and such, but I now see that these guys have many rounds through their rifles before getting problems. I can relax now.
