I just bought an SP-1.  The entire gun looks almost new.  The upper does not have a foward assist, but the bolt has the assist cuts in it.  Where can I find out by serial number if my upper should have a foward assist or not?   What years had the duck bill flash hider? Where can I buy an older style od green sling and a colt bolt carrier with no assist cuts?  Of all the guns I have, this Sp-1 has become an obsession to get it back to the way it came from the factory.    AAAGGGHHHHHHH

It may be in its factory configuration. Mine was completely stock and also had the forward assist cuts in the bolt carrier, but no forward assist. As far as I know, no SP1 rifles ever came with forward assist.

Colt has mixed and matched a lot of parts over the years.

They stopped making slick side bolt carriers around 1967 for the military. It seems unlikely that they continued to make them for civilian models after that time.

Mine was bought new by my uncle on 12/8/83. It was shot about 20 rounds, put back in the box and stored under his bed until I talked him out of it about 3 years ago. I still haven't shot it but just got it out of the safe and nope, no forward assist. Glad I came across this post cuz when i looked in the box I found the sales reciept and a couple new colt 20's with alloy follower.   By the way he paid $479 plus $19 tax.  Boy was them the good ole days.

Mine has a "C" in that location.

My 1982 production SP1 carbine came from Colt with the black sling and two blocked Colt mags (plastic followers).  The bolt carrier had the grooves for the forward assist.  Don't go overboard trying to "correct" something that may well be original.

My SP1 (cicra 1983) has no FA but does have the grooves in the bolt carrier for it.

I spend more time with my rifles.  My computer skills are weak.    I have no idea how to down load pictures.
