Are these a necessary item to have, or is it like the car dealer trying to sell me under carriage clear coat? How often does it happen?

I keep one in my range box for 'just in case' scenarios.
I've never seen it happen to brass or steel, but if you shoot that plastic NATEC stuff you'd best have one handy...

I had a piece of lake city brass broken off in my rifle last month. Luckily it came out after a cool down with a bore snake. I picked up the tool at fun show last weekend for $7.00
