Auction arms link to the AR upper  which uses the proprietary H&K  AR-15 short stroke piston/op rod system---IMO the next great enhancement to the AR system which eliminates the major shortcoming of gas fouling and carbon.  First time I’ve seen one of these for sale.

I want to see what the deal is with the gas piston in a year before I decide to change out the current system on my AR. Currently they are pretty expensive. (Basing that off the Leitner-Wise system)

I kind of like the H&K idea, especially if they are recycling the system from the G36. That would be a huge improvement. But we'll see.

It could be something great, or just another one of those AR things.

Looks like a POF to me

is the upper made by HK?  seems like the POF system marketed by DSA.  If so, this ad is misleading...  and overpriced.

The lietner wise system is already being tested in iraq with the marines. The L&W conversion met the marines requirements for a short stroke piston conversion thats robust and reliable and no heavier than the gas tube it replaces. The L&W system is titanium and so far in the companies test as of the shot show went 40 000 rounds without cleaning or malfunction from an 11.5 M16.If other companys gas piston conversions were all that  the marines would be testing those in a combat situation as well. That means the L&W system would be a new standard M4 variant at least for the marine corp. The future of the AR system is a change in materials used in its production and changes to the current gas system if its gonna stick around, and with these changes it could be around for another 20 years at least maybe more. Now all our boys need is some good performing 5.56..time to redisn the bullet.Im sure we could meet the hague convention on ammo and crate a round that stops an attake with 1 or 2shots.....Hmmmm blended meatal bullet maybe

We've got too many rifles right now to throw them all away.  Retrofit existing uppers to piston driven models and spend a generous amount on creating a new 5.56 round that meets our needs.

They wont be thrown away. They will be sold off

And I recommend people actually read the requirements of the military's next service rifle and SCAR. Nothing about the M16 meets it, not even close, and throwing in a piston wont be enough.

The M16 needs a huge overhaul to meet the requirments of the current rifle trials. Without a dramatic redesign, the M16 is sure to be replaced.

In the public sector, the AR15 is sure to have a bright future, as all 5.56 rifles, and there arent many, fall way behind in terms of performance.

The SCAR and XCR are sure to give the AR15 some real competition for the first time since the import ban

Check out this reference....................ProcNet- US Army TACOM

It illustrates how busy our armed forces are in upgrrading all sorts of gear- weapons and otherwise.

BTW: There are neumerous entries for the M4, the M240, and the OICW and XM8.

Interesting stuff.

These 40,000 round counts are impressive but do they really mean anything?  Are they claiming you can go thousands of rounds between cleaning, even in the desert where the dust is so fine that the SOP is multiple quick internal wipedowns daily?  Are they claiming that would no longer be required?

There is plenty of life left in the AR15 system, for both military and civilian use.

The gas piston is simply another "fad of the month" and is not anything which hasn't been seen in plenty of other rifles, like the AK47 for instance.  Not new, and not better.

There are AR systems which can beat most(if not all) the SCAR requirements already.

Quick Barrel Change system - already available from several companies
Multi-caliber option - already available from several companies
High reliability - already available from numerous companies
Light weight - already available from numerous companies, and can be even lighter if exotic materials are used.
Modular magazine changing capability - about to be released by one company
LMG/SAW variant capable - about to be released by 2 different companies
SPR variant capable - Numerous companies
PDW variant capable - Numerous companies
Capable of utilizing existing optics/NV/accessories currently in inventory - yes
Everything above in one package from one US manufacturer - yes, within a year, maybe by more than one company.

If you took the best from all the US companies doing work on this, and combined them, it would blow the crap out of any of the foreign competition.

If there is a change, it will be because of political action, not the need for a different platform. The AR15 platform can be worked into any configuration that may be needed.

I predict that the gas piston operation will not be a part of the future military weapons system, because of added weight, complexity, and cost, with little or no advantage to offset these drawbacks. FNC, AK, Valmet, Galil, and numerous other top-quality piston-driven designs have been tested against the AR15 numerous times over the years, and came up short. If not for any other reason, the cost will go against them, and cost is a big deal in military procurement.
