When I field strip my AR, the lower seems to not need any cleaning. All the pieces in the trigger mechanism look like the don't even have a touch of power fouling on them.

Since I really don't know how to take all that apart, I've just been spraying out the lower with CLP, letting it drain off the excess oil, and leaving it well enough alone.

Is this an acceptable practice in between complete disassembly cleanings, like once a year if I'm shooting less than 500 rounds a year.?

I've never taken my lower completely apart.  Just wipe any excess gunk out, and maybe light CLP on the moving parts every once in a great while.

most of the time there is no need to do a lot to the lower.  Inspect for debris, look for anything that might get into the trigger mechanism. ( Some posters here have had blown primers get stuck in there and jam the works up, although I've never seen that happen.)

I take out the buffer and spring, and wipe 'em down and CLP 'em.  Sometimes the magazine well needs to be wiped with a cloth inside.  Aside from that you may never need to dissassemble the trigger parts.

The upper and barrel get dirty, they should be thouroughly cleaned.

+1

Get a qtip, wipe out excess gunk. Takes 1min. or less.. Its the upper that gets cruddy.. I shoot  2-400 rds at a time and thats all I do...

+1 on all the above.
I blow out the lower with gun scrubber use a few q-tips and wipe down what I can then lightly re-lube with CLP wipe the whole thing down with a black silicone rag. Takes just a couple of minutes. Even this may be a tad overboard.

Blow out w/high pressure air, then Q-tips, then tetra grease on hammer strike face. That's it.

Yeah, your only problem is that you're shooting less than 500 rounds a year...

Once a year I hose out the lower with Gun Scrubber, they a shot of CLP from an aerosol can, and let it drip the excess, wipe out the excess.  Usually, I just lightly relube it.  I also lube the takedown pins, getting some into the detents via a drop of CLP in the grooves.

Occasionally I remove the buffer and spring, wipe clean, and run a swab down the buffer tube to clean out somewhat.  I don't try to make it perfectly clean.

In the marines they don't even let you touch the lower during cleaning.

+1 I never had to remove the FCG even for white glove inspections. Doing so could get you "office hours"

Of course a couple of cans of unauthorized carb cleaner helped.
