Can someone explain to me what a free float hand guard is, and what is the benefit of having them?  I have a new Armalite M15A4C and I wanted to put a rail system on it so I can mount some accessories.  I believe it is a mid length  handguard.  Any suggestions would be well appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

jake, a free float hand guard is a replacement part for the AR (although many other weapons offer them) that serves as a hand guard, yet does not touch the barrel.

This is intended to enhance accuracy, and deals with barrel harmonics (very technical stuff) but boils down to minimizing influence on the barrel.

many manufacturers offer FF hand guards that double as Free float, and as an attachment point for other accessories like lasers, lights vertical grips etc.

some of the most popular choices are:
Daniel Defense
Troy Industries
LaRue
Samson
YHM
and others

all are available on the Equipment exchange forum here at ar15.com

Most choose the FF accessory as an attachment point, and enjoy the secondary benefit of increased accuracy.

I found a good article on the subject and if I can find it again I will edit it in here for you

Here you go Jake.......... read this including the links in the post I made in the body of the thread.
It clearly explains the whole Free Float thing!!
