A "true" flash-hider like this one designed for the M1 carbine:

Is designed to not only prevent the enemy from seeing the "flash, but aids in preventing the flash from interferring with the shooter.

This is a "flash-suppressor" (Phantom 5C2) which I suspect is what you are asking about:

You'll note, their abit different and while the Vortex G6, the A1 and the standard A2 along with the Phantom shown above ALL are flash-suppressors, a "true" flash-hider (shown on top above) often causes the intertwining and obscuring of the "actual differences" between these widely mis-used terms.

There is a difference.

There are some good flash hiders out there, but No flash hider can conceal your position from the enemy.

Perhaps a sound supressor would be capable of eliminating the burning gases from being seen from the muzzle end.

This works very well on the SPR.  No flash at all through the can.

An LEO at gun shop said good flash hiders are a must for any time you use NV optics or goggles. Dont know how much truth there is to this, but would seem to make sense

According to Feinstein, Schumer, Boxer, Kennedy, et al, a flashider is a cloaking device that also modifies your brainwaves so that you take a Romanian AK knockoff to a school and pick off 6 year-olds like a wolf eating chickens - much like the beast in the movie Predator hunting spec ops dudes in Central America.

I thought it was to help keep dirt out of the barrel, help hold the pig sticker / Bayonet, and look cool
