Why Cant I use a 3/4 X28TPI die and thread my own barrel for a flash hider of compensator? I have heard people talk about having a machine shop thread the barrel. Is there somthing I am missing? Thanks Brian

Well.... I'm guessing because the threads need to be pretty straight, so they get turned on a lathe.

I do remember seeing a thread about someone selling a kit that used a die though.

Normal size for a flash suppressor is 1/2"-28, which means you have to start with the first half-inch or so of barrel turned down to 1/2" in diameter.  Plus, extended flash suppressors and especially sound suppressors require perfectly straight and inline-with-the-boreline threading to prevent the bullets from hitting the muzzle device.

If you were dealing with a barrel that was already the correct diameter (like most AK barrels), and were using a short FS, it wouldn't be a problem, but for ARs, you generally need/want a lathe.
