Forgive my ignorance as I am completely new here. I set out trying to buy what Colt now calls a "Law Enforcement" model AR-15; 16" barrel, colapsable stock, flat top, etc. I figured after the ban was lifted, now I could get one. Wrong! Colt has chosen NOT to start reselling these to civilians. Does anyone know why? I called them and received the canned answer, "We're trying to concentrate on our military contracts." I think that's a load as I believe the military is using up to four different contractors to fulfill their needs these days. That is my first question. Next, a friend redirected me toward Wilson Combat. He says he owns a Colt and would gladly trade me for a Wilson Combat. As I started to research these rifles, I found they only use the heavy barrel. Doesn't this barrel diminish the distance the typical AR-15 can shoot accurately? I don't know anyone who owns one. Does anyone here know anything about them? Why are they so expensive? I have been in the Army for 15 years and am used to being able to shoot accurately at approx. 500yds with the M-16. Finally, if I really want a Colt, how hard is it going to be to find someone willing to sell theirs? Are there a lot of them (16" barrel) out there? Please educate me!! |

www.sawlesales.com www.clydearmory.com Both of those places can get you an LE Colt. SAW has them in stock, but if you wait for one from Clyde's you'll get a better price. You can also look on the EE. ETA: SAW seems to be out of 6920's at the moment. |

There are plenty of Colt LE 6920 carbines to be had. (this is the model number you describe and the most popular choice) Just look around and you will find one. Going rate is from $1,200 to $1,500 brand new in box. AR15.com Equipment Exchange forum, Clyde's SAW, all have em available some with waits involved You could get nearly as good an AR with the Bushmaster M4 A3. you would also save a few bucks, and have less wait to get one. If you want a Colt. Get one........... you wont be sorry!!! welcome to the site, isd503...

People - Thank you very much! There is hope. I need to know what the major difference is between the Colt model 6720 (AR-15A2 Gov't Carbine) and 6721 (AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine). It looks like the following: 1. 800m vs 600m distance respectively 2. 1 in 7" vs 1 in 9" rifling respectively 3. No flat top available for the 6720 Is this correct? |

Go to this Colt web address to download brochures, information and pictures. Enjoy! Colt |
Yep,that is pretty much it. the distance thing is only because the fixed handle A2 has different adjustments than does the removable carry handle version. The guns do not shoot any different, or to different distances. I would highly recommend a flat-top. You will be glad you chose one that way... in the future. carry handles accommodate optics etc, but not like a flatty does. Either the Colt LE 6920, LE 6721, or the Bushy M4 A3, are the pre-eminent 1st AR choices. IMHO |
| Well I am picking up another 6920 from my LOCAL dealer today and I know he's also getting in a 6721 in also. I don't pay above 1150, last one was 1040 but the price did go up around 100 bucks. I'm not a cop either, and no letterhead is required. I might buy the 6721 also but I also have my eye's on a officer's gunsite .45. Dealer also has a 6520 in stock as of last week. Dealer's not all that big but he seems to get them in on a regular basis. Edited to add. Picked up the 6920 and said WTH bought the 6721 also. Both were 1150. 100 more then the ones I bought last year. |
First off, I don't think there is a 6720. You must be talking about a 6520. The 6520 has a standard A2 fixed carry handle upper receiver and a lightweight profile barrel with 1/7 rifling. The 6721 has a flat top upper receiver and a 16" heavy barrel with 1/9 rifling. 6520 is rollmarked "AR-15A2 Gov't Carbine" 6721 is rollmarked "AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine" Those are the differences. Personally, I'd opt for a 6920 as I like the mid-weight M4 barrel, 1/7 twist, and flat top upper. |

buy a bushmaster or some other reliable brand that is cheaper than a Colt, then after you have one, you will definitely want another and slowly start buying up colt pieces and put it together. Building your own will give you everything you want/need and nothing you don't. Side note: Colts are wonderful guns, I have a pre-ban A2 and it works like a dream |
Bought both today, 1150 each. Since the same store sells Bushie m-4s for 1099, I gladly spent 60 extra bucks for each one. I'll give the kiddo the 6721 for christmas next year. I swear by this dealer, been very fair to me. 2 6520s, 2 6721s, and 2 6920s. Had a bunch of OT last week so COTBH. |
Do they have anymore 6920's on hand? |

UPDATE: I took the advise and printed the information off Colt's web site. I was debating between the AR6721 and the LE6920. I like the AR6520, but it's not a flatty. Can't have that. Took some more advise and called Tina at SAW (www.sawlesales.com). She rocks! Knows her rifles too. Patiently answered all my questions and was very helpful. I am arranging to buy at least one from her within the next week. I was only planning on buying one. Then I read another post about buying two in serial number sequence and all kinds of bad things started creaping into my mind. Why choose??? I could get one of each, keep the ones I like and sell the rest, or just keep them all. All of a sudden, it's like an evil Gremlin has taken over... This two in serial number sequence idea sounds pretty cool to me. I've definately decided on buying the AR6721. I like the LE6920, but Tina says it only comes with the step-cut barrel, and I have absolutely no need for that whatsoever. Anyone know if this rifle is available without the step-cut barrel elsewhere? I need more help! Two AR6721's in serial number sequence, or one AR6721 and one LE6920. What would you do, and WHY! |

isd, you have it alright (BRD that is) all the symptoms point directly to it. (insatiable urge to buy more AR's, must have every latest accessory, start doing your own consumer report on every maker product (first hand), white lies to the wifey about the grocery money, and secret call to the bank to double check your credit line- hours upon hours of AR15 pix, etc. ......yep you got it alright) as for the selection, I would get the LE 6920- step cut and all- and here's why. 1) it is 1/7 twist. This enables you to shoot heavier loads more accurately (62 or 77 are common) 2) the step cut...... this is the cosmetic feature that establishes it as the closest civilian copy of our military issue M4. I am not a poser, and I am sure you aren't either, but the point is that these are military type arms. 3) re-sale. There is a greater demand for the 6920 than the others. I suspect you will have it for a lifetime, but if you decided one day to "trade-up" the 6920 will fetch more. Go for it. |
I do not believe they do but I will check on Saturday. They did have a 6520 on the wall tho. FWFW both 6920 and 6721HBAR came from the factory with full circle M-16 colt bolt carriers. The boxes were not even opened til I took posession. I will post here on this thread if they do. |
| I waited as long as I could stand. I took the plunge and ordered one from E5MHotRod. I taking one for the team because I know soon as I jump out of line from Clydes that all of them will come in....your welcome Anyhow, sending out funds tomorrow and hope to have it by next weekend. |
