I am going to be purchasing my first AR soon and cant decide on which one to get.   I am going to get a Bushmaster, but I cant decide between the 5.5" flash suppressor with the 11.5" barrel, or something with a longer barrel and a shorter suppressor.  Will there be a noticable difference in accuarcy with the 11.5"  compared to the 14.5" barrel?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

some say that bbl length has nothing to do w/ acuracy

h/w, i believe that since  a longer bbl makes higher velocities, then the bullet gets to the target faster therefore the bullet spends less time in flight to be affected by wind and other factors leading to greater accuracy and better more effective range

ballistics suck in a short bbl

i would get a 14.5in bbl and a perm phantom

unless you get an sbr, then shorter bbls and big FHs are just for show imo

I agree with Alpha, if you ain't going to make it a short rifle then what is the point.  Go with a 14.5 w/something permanantly attached or just get a 16"er.

As I understand it, 5.56 / .223 rounds need a velocity of at least 2700 fps to fragment relaibly. Drop under that speed, and you have a .22 as far as terminal effects go. With a 16" barrel, that happens at somewhere around 150 meters. With a 11.5" barrel, that happens at around 40 meters.

I know you asked about accuracy, but ballistics are worth some thought as well.

thanks for the info so far.  I will probably go with the longer barrel.  That seems to be the best choice.

If you like the looks of the longer FH . Why not go with a 16 incher with the "slipover" FH?

I switched to the Bushmaster 14.5 with Phantom after the ban went away.  Very pleased with it.  Here is a close-up pic for you.
