Whats a M 231 port firing weapon? What exactly does port firing mean?

Strange lookin variant of AR15/M16 family.

Converted to fire from an open bolt.    Has a handguard with a set of threads molded in at the front near the gas block(no front sight), purpose was so that it could be threaded or screwed into ports on armoured vehicles so that the crew could pump rounds out.

If they had to dismount the vehicle the thing could go along with them.    Supposedly some of them are making rounds in Iraq.

This is a M231 FPW

and

Made to be fired from the firing ports on the M2/M3 Bradleys. Only on the rear ramp on todays (M2A3) model. On the M2 (pictured) there are 6 ports.
Rate of fire is 1300 rpm, I hope that nobody is using them dismounted, I saw someone try it when I was in the Army and the high rate of fire/muzzel climb was so severe that the shooter almost lost control and the FPW rose to almost vertical.

Very effective for suppresive fire, but not accurate since you have to aim through the periscope of the vehicle. every round is a tracer so you can walk the fire to the target. fed with 30 rd mags. (I bet a Beta C-Mag would work great with them)

A fun toy with blanks, but the MILES gear did not work with them.

do they still use those? It seems kind of pointless, since by the time the tracers get you on target you're 30 rounds has gotta be empty (1300 rpm!).

Did they discontinue the wire stock when they started permanently attaching them?  (Makes sense... )

Here's one of my ARs with the old M231-style collapsible wire stock:

Damn 1300RPM  you could empty a mag in 2 seconds.

I don't know when they stopped the wire stock. I can tell you that in my time, 84-87, I have never seen the wire stocks on any M231s

I also don't know what the current policy is on the M231, I do know that my unit in Germany (D 2/30 Inf 3rd ID) installed them when ever we deployed to the field on exercise.

Maybe some Current 11M Soldiers can tell us that.
