Am considering a Trijicon 4x scope for my AR. I have a Law Enforcement buddy that has one and I could not believe the clarity and FOV. Any one have suggestions pro or con?

Which model are you getting?  Personally I'm going to recommend any with the BAC feature (TA-11, TA-31, the compact line....)

heard that the donut is the best--no amber color

I have a TA-01 and love it.  I tried the TA31 and had some problems using the BAC feature.  Seems some folks need a bit more practice with it.

The glass is very clear.

Try one before you buy, if possible.  Some have more forgiving eye relief than others.

I have a TA11D that I purchased through my own shop when I heard I was being deployed again. I used the TA01NSN in Afghanistan and the Reflex II. I have also used the Aimpoint Comp M2 (M68) . All have been mounted on M4's. I spent 10 months in Afghanistan participating in air assualt operations and ground combat operations  in south astern Afghanistan. I had a chance to use and or observe a number of scopes, sights, red dots, etc. employed   in extremely adverse conditions.

The TA11D is hands down my favorite. At 46, my eyes dont have the acuity they had even 5 years ago. the optical system with magnification really helps with target acquisition and ID. I find the BAC feature to be a non issue. Its like falling of a log , for me anyway. I shoot both eyes open and I  can enage targets at close range with no loss of speed or hitability. Prior to this deployment I attended a course at Blackwater for a week and shot my TA11D  extensively (about 2500 rounds) at distances from 7 yards to 100 yards at stationary , lateral movers, and turning targets. It was too easy. i could put every round on the 12" x 16" mover form 75 meters with no problem. The other shooters in the class tried it and all agreed it was unbelievably easy to hit with it. they  jokingly said I was cheating because it seemed so easy to hit with the scope.  That triangle reticle stands out. It gives you an easy reference on target, doesnt obscure the target and has a precise aiming point with the tip of the triangll for precision shots and the whole triangle for CQB enagements. In bright light  the reticle  turns black so there is no wash out. the 3.5X magnification doesnt hurt at short ranges because of the BAC feature. I like it better than the NSNTA01 because it has almost 2.5" of eye relief compared to the 1.5" of the NSNTA01. That doesnt sound like much biut its 60% more. the TA11 is larger and heavier but the benefits outweigh that factor (no pun intended).   I also have mine mounted on an ARMS double lever mount. that adds a little weight.  I have had no problems with maintaining zero with it in the conditions here in Iraq. i conduct mounted patrols in M1114 HMMWV's regularly and the system has had no issues. NOTE: my version is intended for the carryhandle mounting on an M16A2 with fixed handle. It was the only one available so I took it. They said the reticle was calibrated for carry handle mounting  which is higher above centerline of the bore so at longer ranges , over 300M the reticle would not be spot on in relatio to the stadia wires for each range. No big deal. )

Another situation this set-uo is good for is  the urban environment we operate in. Scanning rooftops and buildings  for shooters is so much easier and you can see who is who. Severl times other soldies would  see a LN and thought they had a wepaon. These guys had M68's or irons. Pull up an ACOG and you see its a guy with a rake or  something.  In low light , its hands down the easiest for me anyway. I find the Aimpoint reticle  has too much glare and is not crisp to my eyes, day or night. I see a comet tail when I look through it. I cant use my Reflex II anymore for the same reason. Just age. The ACOG is just right, for my eyes anyhow. I know other guys who have no issue with the M68 at night. the M68 is a great sight. I just dont care for it.

Another advantage is no batteries. the M68 has come a long way and now has 10,000 hour battery life. But my ACOG has none. It never runs down. And its always on.

The TA01NSN  is a good scope but it is no where near as fast as the TA11 due to the reticle. the TA01NSN has a crosshair reticle which is okay for deliberate shots and it is illuminated with Tritium for night use. But the wires are too thin for me to acquire quickly and at night, they dont stand out to my eyes.  Coupled with the shorter eye relief, I iwll take the TA11. the NSN  is a bit smaller and lighter but  it still doesnt do the job of the TA11.

I would suggest you try them both.  But in the end it may boil down to which one is available. Trijicons production is being sucked up by the US military daily. You will not find them  everywhere. Just watch out for the  clones I have seen advertised on Ebay. If its priced below what the normal market is doing, it probaly is an import.

I have the TA01NSN which I like because it has the finer reticle.  Like huntgrouse said it's really going to depend on YOU.  what age are you, how do you see, do your eyes focus fast, what kind of shooting will you be doing?  It's really going to depend on your preferences, that's why they make so many different kinds.  One thing I'll say is that you will like whatever you get over anything else.

good stuff, huntgrouse.

I especially enjoyed the "At 46, my eyes don't have the acuity they had even 5 years ago" part, given my advanced age and fading vision. (47)

Plus...... love to hear how my generation is still in the field dishing it out.

BTW  dasARguy: TA31 for me. The donut obscuring the target never affected me and allows easy and quick acquisition.

You get used to the '2-eyes open' shooting in no time.

they're ok
hahahaha, just joking. They rock HARD! Get a BAC model whatever you do. They are like nothing else out there and scope companies have been chasing their idea of a magnified optic that works for CQB for some time with little to no luck. Worst part about ACOGs is finding them for sale.

I love em!

TA11 and 11D here. I couldn't be happier with them.

I mounted a TA-11 on my Colt 20" A2 Gov't, and it really, really made a believer out of me, and you're talking to a die-hard believer in iron sights.

Definitely get the BAC, and I highly recommend the donut-o-death.

Thanks huntgrouse for the excellent TA11D review in real life conditions...

I just got a TA11D and it is now sitting in a ARMS 19ACOG DL on a 14.5" M4gery. Very nice scope... I may end up putting it on my 20" Gov't like Templar did if or when I decide to get an EOToy... One thing is for sure, the TA11D is staying with me...

I had a TA01, but I like the TA11 much more.   A little more generous eye relief being my main point of choice, but BAC is nice too

This is a Bushmaster AR10, and as such it might scare some of you AR15’ers that are more accustomed to, shall I say, a tamer caliber – so divert your eyes!!! This is a TA11E. If I was going to get it for an AR15, I would defiantly go with a TA31 type. The only reason I got this was the eye relief was MUCH longer, which is a good thing with a .308. I LOVE mine, best 1K I've spent in a while.

I have a TA11D on an AR10.  I love it.   I like the triangle for both precision/distance and close range work.
