I was in Iraq for about 3 weeks back a year or so ago, but at that time I was in Marine security forces and spent my days in a nice palace checking IDs. Now I am going back with a regular infantry unit to get in the good fight. I was wondering what some of you who have done that suggest. My unit said we could bring whatever optics/gear we wanted, currently I am taking:

TA31 ACOG w/ Larue mount and killflash
OP6 light with IR cover
Tangodown foregrip
lots of extra batteries for said items.

I will be issued the following:
M16A4
PVS 14
PEQ2

Anything else I should throw in there AR related??

thanks- Robert

RA,

If I knew I would be doing CQB work, I would think about bringing over an adjustable stock.

+1. If your unit will allow it, an adjustable stock will help out a ton. If not, an A1 or Sully looks enough like the issue piece, and will allow you to use your rifle more effectively with armor.

yeah I would love to have an adjustable, sadly I couldnt swing that, its way to far into unauthorized maintenence. None of my personal weapons have a fixed stock, I wish I could just bring one of my ARs hah.

Good advice and while your at it why not a 14.5" or 16" upper ?

And for defensive perimeter/security detail get yourself a Beta-Mag

Good Luck and God Speed

I'm a proponent of the KISS method. A quality optic and a good light would be all you need on an A4 IMO.

+1 on the Beta C-Mag.   I don't know if you will get a decent sling or not, but a good sling from any of the suppliers on this site would be a good addition.   Especially if you have to hump a checkpoint.

Not sure the BlackHawk would fit over his armor....

It wont, plus I have no need for one, interceptor has magpouches on it

No thanks on the Beta, think it would be ungainly becuase of its large size for alot of things.

Sling is a good idea, I will throw one of my 3 points in my bag, thanks

RustedAce,

Mine fits just fine.  Actually, the one I was issued and the one I bought to replace it go fine over the Interceptor, Spears, Point Blank or the old RBA.

+ another on the collapsible stock.  It will help when you have armor/LBE/vests on and when riding in vehicles or storing your weapon.  A 14.5" or 16" upper wouldn't hurt.

The TA31 ACOG  is a very nice optic if you have a bit of open space.  If you're looking at some CQB, maybe an Aimpoint or EOTech.

RA,

Looks like you got yourself pretty while covered.  Can suggest a BUIS to be mounted with the ACOG.  I got back in early Dec. and wish you well and God speed.

I'd check out what the BTDT's have to say about the beta's before you drop that cash. From what I hear they are great at the range but a baaaaaaaaaaaad idea in the field. I heard that malfunctioning beta's got a couple of the blue's waxed early on in the fighting in Afghanistan.

A mag lula is a real good idea, gotta clean those magazines a lot over there.

One of those orange or yellow mag well blocks.... it will keep the dust out during all the times you can't be locked and loaded (chow hall, around base, etc.).

I've never heard anything good about them from guys who have to depend on them.

If you run out of graphite lube in the field, you’re SOL.  No thanks.

Dude, one thing you might get is some new Magpul followers.  Can't say enough about them.  If thread goes on long enough I'm sure you'll get a +1.   Bring some extras along as trading chips, I'm sure there are fellas over there that would like some in exchange for a smoke/dip/addiction of choice.

Be safe and come home soon.  Yer in our prayers.

Hey brother, I am a squad leader in the 173rd abn and I did a full year in the sandbox.  The gear your going with will do the job.  A collapsible stock  is handy but a fixed stock does deliver a much more rewarding buttstroke.  I would recomend getting as many magazines as possible, check them all out make sure they work and pull maintenance on them like you would your rifle.  I had twenty four magazines and I would keep twelve loaded, twelve unloaded, and change out evry week so the springs could get a break.  I highly recomend using your gangster grip,  it helps with rapid aquisition of targets for cqb and steady hold for longer shots.  Remember no amount of gucci gear can make up for warrior spirit.  When it is time for the asskick, don't be afraid to get it on, put em down, and keep the fight on them.

You have a shaving brush or paint brush? Those are very handy for getting sand and other fine debris out of your upper quickly during cleaning.

Get a Badger Tactical Latch for your charging handle. It allows you to charge/recharge your weapon without taking your firing hand off the pistol grip. (If your right handed). Always say "Hello" with your front sight post. You can relax after you've verified the threat/non-threat.

That's not much of a trick.  I can do that with the stock catch.  Plus, the stock one never hangs up on my gear.
