I AM THINKING OF TRYING TO ASSEMBLE AN AR FROM SCRATCH.

MY STUPID QUESTION IS THIS:  DOES THAT MEAN I NEED TO HAVE AN FFL?  IT WOULD BE MY FRIENDS MONEY THAT THE PARTS ARE ORDERED WITH...

WHAT ELSE AM I MISSING HERE?

YOU NEED TO PURCHASE THE LOWER RECEIVER FROM AN FFL (LICENSED GUN DEALER) UNLESS YOU DO A FACE-TO-FACE SALE IN YOUR HOME STATE.  ALL OTHER PARTS, INCLUDING THE INTERNALS FOR THE LOWER RECEIVER, CAN BE PURCHASED & MAILED ONLINE.

THE ONLY OTHER THING YOU ARE MISSING IS THE CAPS LOCK BUTTON.

OK thanks for the help
Is there anyone that sells compete uppers with the ACE M4 Socom?

why is the caps lock a big deal?

The stock will (would) come with the lower.  You will not get any stock with any upper you buy.
CAPS lock makes it hard to read.
You can buy completed lowers but isn't that defeating the purpose of building it yourself?  You will buy a stripped lower from any number of dealers and have it transferred to you through your local FFL.  You will buy the internal parts kit and put them in.
Then you will buy the stock kit, such as the one you mentioned the M4 SOCOM by ACE.  They are great and I have two of them.  You can get the stock either with or without the buffer and spring.  Regardless, you will need the buffer and spring so if you don't buy the stock with it included you will need to purchase the CAR length buffer and CAR spring.
Then you can buy the completed upper and just slap it on. Or, you can do the upper build yourself but that will require a few more tools, nothing serious.

My understanding is, that it is OK for you to assemble a rifle for a friend if he bought the parts as long as you are not making money off of it. BUT this is just MY understanding and I am not a BATF agent....I don't even play one on TV.

If you are buying a rifle or lower for someone who cannot legally buy it himself, you are performing an illegal "straw-man purchase", which is a federal felony.

CAP means you are yelling.  When I read your post I yelled at myself in my brain and now I am crying. thanks a lot...

You can help somebody put their rifle together if they buy it and they keep it.  If your friend buys you a rifle which is in pieces and you put it together and you keep it, you are in downtown "straw purchaseville" which is the capital of  "felony city"
