The only difference between a short rifle and a machinegun is a few dollars.  Remember that car you bought 10yrs ago for 12,000 and now it's worth $1200  well back then the M16 was 1200  and is now 12000. So which was/is a better deal?

In South Dakota you should have no problems,  if you need dealer contact info send me an email.

Are you saying a person needs CLEO sign off and all the additional paperwork as if purchasing a full auto to get a tax stamp just to get a short barrel?

To get a rifle receiver registered as an SBR where you are planning to convert it you must:

1. Fill out your form 1 and get it signed by your CLEO (the hardest part) OR incorporate yourself and send it as a corporate form 1, no CLEO signoff required.(easy way to do it).

2. send your $200, form 1, passport photos, prints, etc to Uncle Sam c/o BATFE

3. Wait about 45 days if corporate, up to 180 days if individual.

4. get your tax stamp back and have your receiver engraved, put your short barrel/upper on your receiver.

5. Have fun

Make sure you put all the calibers you could possibly want and "less than 16 inches" for barrel length so you are not tied into one configuration.

Well thanks for the input but it's not what I wanted to hear. I don't want to ruin any lowers with engraving. Thought maybe just a piece of paper or stamp to go with the upper and use it on what ever I wanted to.
