for my pistol build, i will be using a CAR buffer tube for reliablility. to prevent a stock from being readily attached to the tube, i am going to drill a 5/16" hole at the end of the buffer tube, insert a bolt and weld a nut to the end of the bolt. my question is, will there be any issues on reliability with the spring against the 5/16" bolt?

First off, extra points for you for paying attention to the pistol thread!

To answer your question, anything that exists on the inside of the tube can shorten the allowable stroke and adversely affect reliability.  I might obtain/make a1/4"-28 to 10-32 adapter and weld that into the rear of the tube with a fender washer (make tube OD larger).  This would allow you to install a standard swivel stud at the read of the tube.  You get what you need, plus it looks like it has a reason for being there.

i don't have an aluminum feed for my mig welder. that's why i was going to drill a hole in the buffer then do the bolt thing. as far as 5/16", that's the size a standard detachable sling swivel (i'm going to drill out the end to attach the swivel)
