I am interested in getting an M4 style carbine for a short pickup rifle for the coyotes around the ranch. Any input would be appreciated on recievers, barrels (chrome vs. steel) and just this style in general. I have been going over the discussions and there is a great deal of info on this site, but alas it is almost too much info. Thanks in advance for any ideas you can give me. Thanks |

welcome-i bought the rockriver arms entry tactical model with a chrome lined barrel. the only problem i could see is a bigger guy would have trouble with the shorty stock. i'm 5'11" 200 lbs. and i thought it fit just fine. my dad is a little broader in the shoulders and can't stand it. that's why i put the 6 pos. stock on it. now i can fit to what i need and if it needs to be smaller-it collapses. give it a look. just my .02 cents. jake

I assume you are talking about an assembled rifle, not building one? I think most people would recommend a chrome lined barrel. Almost all quality recievers are pretty much the same, almost all are forged (v. cast). Make sure the barrell is thin under the handguards, some M4 barrels have only had the proper profile where you can see them, and are thicker and heavier under the handguards. Simple answer-personally I'd say get a Bushmaster, though I suppose a RRA if the barrel is thin under the handguards (I don't know if that is the case now or not) and if it was chrome lined would be okay also. edit-get the one with the removeable carry handle so you can more easily mount optics. I passed on recommending a colt because the m4 type models are overpriced at the moment and, in my opinion, the cost over a Bushmaster is not warranted, particularly for a working carbine. |

welcome wildlandfighter. That recommendation could go many routes, but the easy answer is get the best you can afford that would be....... in my personal preference order from the best down: Colt (6920, 6721) ( Link) Bushmaster M4A3 (Link) RRA (Link) again, wild, this could go on ad infinitum, but these stand out as the creme of the crop |
WLFF welcome aboard ![]() I will get laughed at around here but for what you are describing I would get a post ban M4, swap the stock to a collapsing M4 and forget about the other evil features. I'm thinking flash suppression and bayonet mounting are not high on your priority list. Spend $700 - 800 on a decent rile, and put the money into a high quality ARMS throw lever mount and decent optics. The throw lever mount will let you throw the rifle into the truck and keep the the scope in a padded case. Just an idea.......... |

If you can keep your range to about 150 yards I would recommend a 14.5 inch chrome lined, bore and chamber, with a permanently installed phantom FS. The 14.5 inch with phantom will be more manueverable inside the cab of your truck, and get the chrome lined barrel because you sound like you will be using your rifle as a tool and not a toy, and it will be easier to clean and more resistant to the elements. I haven't got a 150 yard shot on a coyote yet, but at 80 to 85 the 14.5 inch barrel has been more than adequate. It is also much better for sitting in the laurels of southern WV where space is at a minimum, and turning areas are tight. |

stock AR: BUSHMASTER (rra, colt, armalite too) are probably your main contenders build: stripped lower (MEGA, dpms, rra, stag, stinger, lar, etc), AR kit from del-ton or JTDistributing i suggest a 16in HBAR A3 (flatop) what ever you get, get it chrome- LINED and 5.56 chambered also, read this :www.ammo-oracle.com and WELCOME to the site! |
| Weird as it sounds, I also want to hang a Light package off of it, (i'm familair with Surefire, own a handgun with one plus a 6P) and maybe a lazer....when we calve the shooting is quick and dark...Dad (Vietnam 67-68 71st Assault Helicopter) thought he had it figured out a few years ago...Chief A.J. Mini 14...Doesn't come out the window fast enough... |

SamColt, You are a smart man! I hadn't thought about the mounts and keeping the scope in a padded case. Hell i'll have to clean out the pickup now....Anyone need to trade for a worn out Blue Heeler Dog, 522 Remington .22Lr(carton broke, Im sure one could still find 522 of them in there), and some fence clips. |
