I just got a KAC M4 RAS today that I will putting on an LMT M4 upper when it too arrives.  I have heard that some people actually mount them upside down so that when using a vertical foregrip it will be more stable/secure.  I will not be mounting optics on the top of the RAS.  Is mounting it upside down a good idea?  Also, I have heard of quite a few people pop off the heat shield on the bottom panel, is this worthwhile/wise.  I have not actually had a chance to see the RAS yet, I'm at school and my Dad called this evening to tell me it had arrived.  I was wondering how the heat shield was attached, does it use screws, rivets, something else?  What is the best way to remove it?

Sorry for so many questions, I just want to be sure of what I'm going to do...don't want to mess up what took a college kid so long to save for.

I don't think you can.
there is a latch that is made to go over/around the gas tube with a screw.

never tried it... let us know how it works

Just install it like it states in the manual. You will not be disappointed. The vertical grip is rock solid on it, and the only play you'll feel is the upper and lower receiver moving.

It's not a big deal. I hear they become loose in time. I have had mine installed like the manual for a while now with no problems.

The upside down mounting was something done with the RIS, not done with the RAS, which has to lock around the gas tube.

If your ras does not have the upgraded locking SAS lower rail, its worth the money.

ESPECIALLY if you ever train to do muzzle-strikes

Thanks for clarifying, I couldn't remember if it was the RIS or RAS people were mounting upside down.

The last few posts make it seem like the lower panel can get quite loose.  Is this really a problem?  Right now 120bucks is a little much for the lower panel, especially after just spending a SHIT-TON on AR parts this month.  I'm but a poor college kid.  I've always been more fond of the butt-stroke than the muzzle strike, though.  I guess it comes from hearing Sergeants always saying they'll butt stroke us.

If I'm not mistaken, which I very well might be, you have removed the heat shield Lumpy.  If so, do you find this to be an improvement?  How did you remove it if you did in fact take it out.  Like I said, I could be mistaken, but I thought I'd read that in one of your posts.

Thanks for all the info guys...man this site is great.
