Put together my M4gery back in 1991.  At the time it was all Bushmaster, over the years this M4gery has been rebuilt at least four times.  It is currently all Colt's with Aimpoint and Knights bling bling type stuff.  Is supposed to be a clone of a 1997 Colt's M4.  The M4 become Standard A in 1997, and I like the look of the early rifles with gray finish and "type 1" buttstock.  The M68 (Aimpoint CompM) and Knight's RAS were also standardized that same year.  The 14.5" barrel has a A2 flash hider with Smith jam nut added, along with a A1 washer, and A2 peel washers.  I silver soldered it on with 1,100 degree silver solder, you can see the discoloration of the finish from the heat.  In the past I had refinished the muzzle after silver solder, but I don't think this looks to bad.  The upper receiver dates from about 1996, it is a rare forging variation (can you spot it?).  The lower is a Colt's MT6400C Colt's Defence coated with Norrell's to match the upper.  Of course there was no such thing as Colt's Defence in 1997.  Got a MT600C Colt's MFG CO INC lower for it the other day, am going to shoot some Norrell's on it to match the rest of the rifle.

Now you're posting pictures of something I truly enjoy (hence my screen name).

I have the same Colt 14.5" upper on my registered M16. As best I can tell, the only difference in markings is the right side of the front sight base (mine has S [what looks like "RI" in a circle] 2) and the front of my upper has "M4" while yours has an "M" only.

Talking about the aluminum upper receiver forging itself.  Guess I should have took a close up of the upper receiver.  It has an extra indentation in it.

Very cool rifle Ekie.

I especially like how you took care of the flash hider and got your legal length up there. I’ll have to remember that.

The only M4gery I have thus far is my little Bushmaster M4A3 with the 14.5-inch 1/9 barrel and a permanently attached Gemtech BiLock. I’ve only got about 350 rounds through it so far, but it works just fine. Haven’t added any of the other accoutrements yet (RAS, M68) but I’ll get there. The money is being spent on other gun stuff at the moment.

Nice rifle there.

The first time I did it up with a Bushmaster barrel, with a spacer and a GI suppresor.  Second barrel had a Phantom on it, never could get use to the look of that thing, so this time went back to the GI A2.

Ha, no I am done taking pictures for the day, spent the whole morning shooting pictures.  Look at the right side close up, in front of the deflector, above the port door, see it?

Thanks for the cool pics.  Sorry for the dumb question, but is that Colt MT6400C lower you have pictured come stamped "M4 Carbine" or did you have someone engrave that ?  Been wanting to build up an M4'gery, but might wait and get an actual Colt on this type of set up.

Is it on the receiver's rail, directly below the silver pin in your rear flip-open scope cover? That's the only discoloration I can see.

Yes, a MT6400C is roll marked M4 Carbine.

Thanks for the kind words Eike

I bought this rifle (or what’s left of it) on Sept. 14 as a 14.5-inch Bushmaster M4A3 with a Phantom on it. I have never really liked the way the Phantom looked and having one confirmed it. I sold the upper and got another 14.5-inch with A2 flash hider (NFA) from Bushmaster. I had that off to Gemtech right away and that’s what you see in the pic.

Above and infront of the port door is an indentation that follows the contour of the barrel extension that is behind it.  On this particular upper receiver there is another indentation that mirrors that one on the other side of the port door.  This indentation is right in front of the cartridge deflector as it "flows" into the rest of the receiver, right above the port door.  This is the only upper I have seen like it, and it is part of the original forging.

I like it too, it's a lot of money for a flash hider though.
