| I would like to buy an AR with a 20 in barrel, and i'm gonna be using it for a lot of plinking, but i also want to be able to use it for varmint and target shooting too. Pretty much i need something with awsome accuracy out to about 300yards+ when i need it and also to just be able to put a few hundred rounds through it on a saturday morning.I know i'm gonna scope it but i don't like the flat tops and i was kinda going for a mil-spec model possibly an A3.I only wanna spend about 1300 on the gun. I was thinking about a Bushmaster, but i'm just not sure what to get. Thanks. |

Flat tops are the way to go for optics. Mounting any optic on the carry handel puts the optic way to high off the stock and changes your chek weld to a chin weld. If you plane to mount optics get a a3, down the road you'll be thanking people, that you got it. no optics a 20 in aA2 is the way to go for what your looking for. only down side to Bushmaster has been there triggers. there a little on the heavy side, but for 120 you can install a rra NM trigger that breaks a nice 4.5 pounds. |
| I agree with Gregory K, get the flat top. Unless you plan on competing in High Power rifle competitions or just really like iron sights there should be no reason to get the standard A2. I bought a Bushmaster 20 HB with A2 sights and still whish I had shelled out the extra clams for the flat top. No matter what kind of optics you end up with it is better to have more options. Having a scope on the carry handle just puts it way to high for most types of shooting. |

I've got a Bushmaster XM15E2S with a 20" HBAR 1-9 barrel. I haven't used match-grade ammunition. "Plinking-grade" ammunition has yielded groups of 1 m.o.a. on a good day, but on average gives 1.5 to 2 m.o.a. groupings. I think my rifle shoots better than I do. If you really want small groups, I suggest you purchase a rifle designed for varmint hunting, a flat top with a heavy barrel (20" or more inches long) that doesn't have a front sight base. I think some are available with a weaver rail where the front sight base usually is. Then you could mount Back-Up Iron Sights of your choosing. The twist rate of your barrel is another consideration. The 1/9 twist rate is versatile, but some specialty varmint bullets prefer slower twist rates. The choice of chamber dimesions is another consideration. You may be able to wring tighter groups from a tighter chamber, but tighter chambers may not be compatible with ammunition that exceeds SAAMI specifications. Hope that helps. Sincerely, Craig |
| For the $1300 you have in your budget, you can get a new Colt 6920 (M4). Shooter's Discount just got a shipment of them in stock. I got another one when they were putting them out yesterday morning and they had about 50 or so left just before close. If you call (410)247-6757 today, you might be able to get one. |
| Putneyswope, how was the fit and finish on your new Colt? I'm trying to convince my wife it's better to pay a little more now and actually have the rifle rather than sit on some waitlist for an indefinite amount of time. If they still have any left after Christmas, I might cave in to my crushing desire to own one of these so called "unattainable' rifles. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up one of the real nice used ones he had bcak in November at the PG county gunshow. |
Agree also. I bought a A2 16" and loved it. I than was thinking of optics and didn't want to mount something on the carry handle. For $100 I picked up a RRA upper receiver and had my dealer swap out the A2 upper so now I have an A3. Do yourself a favor and buy an A3.

Keep in mind that Bushmaster also makes a 24” bbl. You wind up with a long gun but I would think a tad more accurate. My friend has a2 upper he put a red dot sight on it. he did not like how high it was after mounting it so he returned it. I how ever though it was great because my right eye is weak. With the scope that high my chin was on the stock but I could use my left eye and hold the AR right handed. |

Sometimes, if you go to gunshows, you can get some good deals on rifles. A guy at the last gunshow had a NIB Bushmaster AR15 A2 w/ removable carry handle and all evil features, 30 rnd mag, and case for $745. I paid $725 for my Armalite M15 A2. So you can get a 20 incher for a good price and be happy. If you would like to build it yourself, a fella on the EE has some real nice M16 A1 uppers with the furniture included for around $295 I THINK. Most people seem to be happy with them. Get one of those, a used lower from the EE, a bolt and bolt carrier and put it together. Maybe that will save you some money. Just a thought Kevin |
| I was at a gunshow over the weekend and i saw a 20" bushy for 850, i should have picked it up but i didn't get the $$ till this past week so i'll have to wait for the next one. 20" sounds good though. I'm really not up for building them though, i don't have the time to look since i'm in school and all, that's an idea for the summer though.thanks |
