Is it legal (by ATF rules and regs) to purchase a long gun (shotgun or rifle) out of state at a gun show? (I realize that handguns cannot be purchased out of state but am unsure about long guns.) Thanks for your help.

Only if you purchase it from an FFL.  You cannot do a private purchase of ANY weapon out of state, they must go through an FFL.

In fact, to protect yourself, you should always make sure an unknown buyer at a gun show proves his state of residence and age with his DL before oyu sell to him/her.

Im not tryin to start a argument, but I thought that was only true when buying and SHIPPING it over state line, not if you actually are there in person and purchase it

Secondofangle is correct - I live in VA and drove up to MD to buy a LE6920 from a FFL. Paid the guy, got to hold it for minute before giving it back to the FFL to shipment to my VA FFL so I could then go and pick it up in a couple of days. What a system!
