Well, if I post at AR15.com I may as well get an AR. But with all the different companies and styles, and just plain different builds I have no idea where to start.

This wouldn't be a nail driving competition rifle, but more just a fun plinker. I would like to make it look as "black" as I can. But living in CA that might pose some issues. But those will come later. For now I would love to know if there is a good entry level AR15 that wouldn't break my staving student budget.

Or would I be better off building it from parts like I did my PC?

I really appriciate the info you guys and gals can provide. Thank you.hug.gif

Since you are in CA, your choices are very limited. I'm not even sure what they allow out there now, but IIRC you can only have an AR that doesn't accept a detachable magazine. I'm sure one of the CA members will come along to share there knowledge on the issue.

Yeah, looks like you will have to go with a Fab 10 lower.
But on the bright side, you can put a M4 A3 upper on it, they are nice uppers for plinking, and allow for optics.

Well I now show how big a n00b I am. Whats a FAB10? I'm guessing is somehow restricts the use of a magazine containing more than 10 rounds?

Capacity isn't a huge deal. I just want something to take out and have fun with. I do plan on putting an H&K M4 upper on it when they are released. So that takes care of the upper. I just don't know how to distinguish a FAB10 from any other types of lower recievers.

Being new is never easy lol.

The FAB-10 lower has a fixed magazine. To load, you must punch out a takedown pin, swivel the upper forward, attach a stripper clip charger, remove a loaded stripper clip, strip off the rounds into the magazine, remove the clip and charger, pivot the upper back, and put the takedown pin back in. OK for the range, but definetly something you don't wanna use in self-defense. For a CA legal .223 autolading carbine for self defense, I'd go with a Mini-14 or an SU-16.

Do a quick search and you'll find plenty of info but its basically like any other AR-15 lower but it has the magazine well welded closed.  You push out the pin, flip the upper forward and use stripper clips to manually load 10 rounds at a time.  Its the best option out there for you repressed Kalifornian's at this point.

Oh, and a true A3-M4 upper will need a 1.5" flashhider permanetly attached so you dont make yourselve a SBR  ;)

Damnit, this state sucks!

Can I move in with one of you guys?

Well I do like th M1As, but that a lot of $ I don't have, that's why I aimed for an AR15. I'd love a SOCOM 16, or a Scout Squad model. But Even after I get the gun I'd feel bad having to put cheap ammo through it.

THIS STATE SUCKS!

Instant message me or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions about Fab 10..

I have recently bought one as well as the m4a3 upper and adjustable stocks, it's almost finished (so no pics yet!) but i just went through the same process as you and it took a while but i think it will be worth it =)

So can you have a normal mini 14 in KALI? Or do you have to modify it some how?

Mini-14 is legal, it has a friendly, non-lethal straight stock instead of a mean, deadly pistol grip .
