I'm thinking about a 9mm build.  I "just happen" to have a Bushmaster lower rady for a new project.  I have never had a 9mm AR and it looks like one might be kinda cool.  I'm not sure how I feel about doing one with a 16" barrel or going the SBR route.  Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I built a RRA with the 16" barrel. I would suggest that you start with a 16" flat top. Shoot it for a while. You can always SBR later. I would like to SBR and suppress mine. I like it a lot.

I would definately do a 9mm with a flattop upper, rail HG, Etc.  I don't think I'd like a 16" 9mm barrel though.  It seams to me that it kinda defeats the purpose of a CQB rifle.  I'd probably go the extra mile and do the SBR route.

AR-shoot-r, try it you'll like it! I have had a lot of fun with mine. Whatever you choose Colt or Oly style, 16" or SBR. Being able to shoot at indoor ranges is a plus.

I’ve got a little 9mm Colt SBR and absolutely love it.

Like the other guys have said, try it out first with a 16-inch barrel and then SBR if you really want to.

I’m real happy with the A1 upper, but then I’ve also never used a flattop on a 9mm.

+1 on the indoor/pistol range thing too.

It would be one build that you DEFINITELY would not regret.

unless its just for plinking or just to have, i would go w/  the sbr route if ifs for a pistol caliber--pistol calibers will tend to LOOSE velocity after 12 in of bbl or so (depending on caliber)

besides, if you stay w/ the 16in bbl route, you might as well get a high powered cartrige

No intentional flame but have you considered a Storm? Great gun, 100's down the pipe of mine and hi-caps are less $

Nothing yet. But I see a SBR 9mm in the near future........

Oh, and I'd suggest against the Storm.

You're right.  There's absolutely nothing appealing about a 9mm AR.

I would love a 9mm AR and as much as I hate colt I have to say I have shot a few different types and the colt seems to be the most reliable. So if I got one it would have to be the colt system....GOD I cant beleive I just said that.Rabbit 9,I like it and it looks like a colt?isnt  the colt system with its mags the only system that alows the bolt to be locked back on the last shot.I like being able to stii use all the standard controls as some systems dont alow the use of the normal mag relese button or bolt wont lock back.I was told it was the mag folowers that alow this in the colt but in any event I would have to have it this way so I guess I would have to bend for the colt.I wish Bushmaster would make a 9mm model and a 1911 for that matter.Would love the snake logo on a 1911.

It's a COLT.

The Colt magazines are currently the only one's that will activate the bolt stop, but hopefully with all the increased interest, that will change.  The Colt magazines are pricey.

I want to do a 7.5" shorty in 9mm. Flat top, OKO red dot, low-pro gas block, Surefire bolted on the handgaurd in the 2:00 position with tape switch on the magwell, stubby stock, and an AAC suppressor.

The 9mm AR is affordable to feed and a lot of fun.
I took my cousin (fist time shooter) shooting. Between a AK, M4gery, 9mm AR, Benelli M1 and a10/22, he liked the 9mm AR the best. A friend took his son, and the son mad ethe same choice from the same assortment. I'm ready to build another one.

How much are the colt mag blocks and mags?

I thought about building an RRA 9mm but it would be expensive in the long run. Mainly b ecause of the mag block thing. And why does RRA only offer 25 round mags?

I saw a video of a guy with a 9mm AR and he was using sten mags and they worked great.

The 9mm AR's function as a straight blow-back action; there is no gas block.  The stubby stock may also cause you problems.

The Colt and RRA guns use the same system/components.  LEO/no-ban magazines are legally obtainable, but still in short supply, so they still aren't as cheap as they should be.  The Colt 32 rnd magazines retail for around $60, but good luck finding them.  RRA advertises the 25 rnd magazines because they are using converted UZI mags.  The factory COlt magazines were available as 20 rnd or 32 rnd capacity.  The converted UZI magazines have been hit or miss as far as reliability is concerned, but unlike the Colt magazines, they will not activate the bolt stop.

The sten magazine conversion is usually associated with Olympic Arms system.

9mm has a horrible trajectory.  If you intend to use it as a rifle forget it.  9mm is a good indorr/cityslicker caliber.

That's why LE agencies use it right?  An  AR chambered in 9mm is a excellent CQB platform.

My 10.5" barreled Colt shoots 4" groups at 100 yards, and takes down the steel better than the .223.  I normally shoot 147 grn sub-sonic loads, but in a 9mm AR you certainly aren't limited by the loading.  The 124 grn Hirtenberger SMG (or any +P/+P+ load) ammunition produces more than enough velocity to be effective at distance.

Hell, the trajectory of the .45 cal PCC's isn't that bad at 100 yards.

Once I took my 223/5.56 upper off my gun and put the 9mm upper on. while I have not had my 223/5.56 upper back on. It is a lot of fun. I went the SBR rought. Went with a 11 1/2 barrel. Know I am looking for all the toys. 9 mm guns are a lot of fun. I went with a 25 yard zero. at a 100 I am only a cople inch low.

Go for it you will love it

I use a H-buffer, and had the bolt ramped

Mine will be:
Mega 9mm marked lower
Vm Hy-tech block
RRA 9mm A4 upper cut to 10.5" w/ perm 5.5" FH
Cav Arms OD furniture w/ socom m4 stock and ergo grip.
cheapo carry handle until I get another Eotech.

Just waiting out RRA's backorder right now.......

Dosent the "C" in CQB stand for "close"?  I guess when I think of a rifle I think of 100meters+, I can do 100 or less with a shotgun.  Try shooting a 9 at 150 or 200 meters.  If you have to get one get a Hi-Point carbine and save $1000.

Alright genius, what's the average distance for engagement by LEO SNIPERS?  Let me give you a hint, it's well under a hundred yards, and I can make head shots at that distance with my 9mm.

The 9mm AR, or any other 9mm PCC, has a lot to offer within it's operating parameters.  Do I need to make 150-200 yard shots with my 9mm?  No, because I have other guns for that purpose.  The 9mm is just another tool in the box.

My brother has a 5.56 M16.  He got a few M16 short barrel uppers.

He installed a 9mm mag block and got an upper.

He bought  more short 9mm uppers for his M16.  Buy the way, he doesn't own an AR-15.

Now he shoots his 10.5", 9mm upper all the time.  He hasn't used the 5.56 uppers since.  I now have his factory, 11.5", Colt Commando upper for my SBR.

I shot his 9mm M16 and liked it so much I got a 9mm L.E.O. Colt carbine right after the ban.

I'm very happy with the 9mm AR-15.

The indoor range I shoot at allows anything up to and including .50 cal rifles.  I should be able the shoot the 9mm AR-15 at any indoor or outdoor range.  It's cheaper to shoot and practice with the AR-15 weapon's platform.

Get one, build one, just do it for the fun of it.

I used to shit on the 9mm AR, until I shot my buddy's AR6450. I got one as soon as the ban expired, and now it's my favorite gun.

Cheaper ammo= more trigger time

(no gas system)much easier to clean= more trigger time

(no gas system)more reliable= more trigger time

It's a no brainer.

I fired the Colt M3 last Spring.  It was sweet, but not as smooth as the HK MP-5.  If I had the money, I wouldn't pass on getting an M3 versus an MP-5 for more money.
