I really like the look of the SPR's but I don't have any smithing abilities and I don't have $3000 to spend.  Is there anything out there in the $1000-$1300 range (w/o optics or rings)?  I want the 18" SPR contour barrel.  Thanks.

You could get something done for that amount of money, but I dont believe you'll be able to do the 18" SPR contoured barrel. Those are pretty much all custom barrels from what I understand and will put you over your limit.

Yes.

You can come close for your price range without sights and optics.  Call Jason at www.jtacsupply.com

One budget suggestion is to use a Clark free float tube. Carbon Fiber, something like 150.00-200.00 cheaper than the PRI (?)  tube. I can't speak to quality, as Ive never seen or used one. But I did entertain a similar idea at one time. May still do one in the future. You can get a decent price on the 18" SPR barrel through White Oak Armament.  248.00   http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/   The rail is spendy, but you might find one used for a decent price.  Keep an eye on the equipment exchange.  Good luck. One thing to try is to contact ADCO and see what they can set up for you.   Their SPRish barrel is about $308.  The other thing you could do is to take a hbar 20" 1x7 from Bushmaster or colt and have someone cut it down to 18".  That is pretty close in my book, but it depends on how authentic you want it.

As mentioned, the other part that will be expensive is to get the ff handguard, whether you try and go with a mod0 or mod1.

I think it is doable if you are just trying to get an upper.  Like I said try adco and see what they can assemble for that price range.

Like the others have said, are you going for the real deal or something similar? If you want the real deal, I would suggest spreading out the cost by buying things when you get the cash or looking for the deals in the EE.
If you're going for something on a budget, it'll be easier to clone a Mod1 than a Mod0, so how's this?

-WOA SPR barrel w/ faux brake from Adco $350 (I'd get the matching bolt for the extra $45)
-Yankee Hill lightweight quadrail FF tube $130
-RRA complete upper receiver $100
-RRA bolt carrier w/ parts to complete the bolt/carrier assembly $75
-A.R.M.S. #22H rings $100
-RRA lower receiver $100 (I like the tight fit of the RRA)
-Sierra Precision SPR grip $20
-lower parts kit $50
-A1 stock (complete) $50
-Harris Bipod $80
-First Samco mount $30
-Knights 600m sight- $125 (used)
-Y/H rail mounted flip up front sight $75

That total puts you at $1285 not including a scope, of course you can add or subtract things from there.

MY SPR-gery on the cheap was (is) being built up by EE deals and patience.

bushmaster complete lower WITH KAC trigger  used $250
Complete upper with WOA 20 inch service rifle SS barrel and fitted bolt, with PRI lowpro gas block...$400 used on EE
Machine work to cut barrel to 18 and thread...FREEBIE
danial defense 12.0...$280 shipped from Brownells
Vortex from Eagle firearms $50

so far I am at $980 and this is with some pretty pricy parts in it
Still need a bipod and optics, and SPR grip.  I figure the money saved hunting deals I am putting towards some good glass.I will have pics up later in the week.

My SPR upper cost about $1500 with optics... Specs are

From JTAC Supply

RRA Flat Top Upper
WOA KG Coated 18" SPR barrel
YHM Flip Up Sight Front Sight
Standard RRA Bolt,Carrier, Charging handle
YHM Lightweight 4 rail float tube

About 900 total (I don't want to give exact totals, talk to Jason at JTAC and he'll set you up)

Optics
Super Sniper 10x Scope (www.swfa.com) $300
Larue SPR Scope Mount (G and R Tactical) $195

If you don't have a lower add $200-300 bucks for that. I also added a Chip Mccormick drop in trigger group (this thing is great), but you could get the RRA 2 stage Match trigger for about 150 bucks (ADCO has these)..

So your budget is right on if you don't spend too much on optics...

I was looking to go authentic.  Its looking like it will be too expensive.  I have a HK-91 so I might buy a Rem 700 Police in .308 and share the optics.  Only way I'd be able afford an SPR would be to sell the HK...and I don't really want to do that.  Thanks though everyone...some awesome looking rifles!

I'm planning a budget SPR-ish build. I'll be using the following:

1-8 twist DPMS stainless 20" heavy barrel, cut and turned to SPR contour. I settled for the 1-8 twist. ($160)
YHM flip up front sight/gas block ($75)
YHM railed hand guard ($150)
T-marked CMT upper ($100)

I'll probably just put a phantom on it and call it good.

All of that for under $1300 -

Understand that is just the upper.

Ya, that's what I figured.  Just poking fun and preventing CMS's hopes from getting up too high.
