Shot taker, to Answer your question, no, not ANY 7.62 upper. Only certain ones: 1) A 7.62x39mm (cartridge known for use in the SKS, AK47, AKM) upper WILL fit on a standard AR15 type lower receiver. However the Bolt, barrel, magazines must be made for 7.62x39. There are plenty of vendors selling 7.62x39mm uppers and components, these components can range from Colt to Model1sales. 2) A 7.62x51mm NATO (Cartridge known for use in M14, M60, AR10) upper WILL NOT fit a standard AR15 type lower receiver. The cartridge is too long, and a receiver with much larger mag well is needed, such AR type rifles are the AR10, DPMS LR-308, and BM BAR-10. Only a few components interchange between .308 (7.62x51mm NATO) and .223 (5.56x45mm) AR type rifles. You can see the difference between the 7.62x39mm and the the 7.62x51 cartridges here:  .  I have been able to amass 12 "frankenmags" @ various fun shows & the internet. All (including the F#%@ing USA mags) have run 100% in the Model "1" Sales upper. Hopefully someone will start making some more NEW mags, as they have at least a 4-year window to

That's probably the *best* option to use 7.62x39, but the downside to that is that you have to modify the upper receiver and the carrier IIRC. |
True but the upper & carrier will both last a loooong time. |
