Hey guys. I'm new here so please hold back the wrath of God if I'm asking lots of newbie questions.

I was curious what the thoughts are about the Bushmaster m4a3? I've been seriously thinking about buying one of these rifles.

I currently have an Eagle Arms that I built myself and an Armalite upper. It's great except it's very picky about what ammo it eats. I started to buy a RockRiver Upper but I decided to hold off. I'm somewhat interested in getting a semi custom AR.

I'd like to add some optics, I've been looking/reading about the AimPoint and all the flavors it provides. My questions are: What exactly are these flip up and flip down sites everyone is talking about? I understand having a backup sighting system but I'm slightly confused on how this works. I have the detachable rear sight and I'm not sure how this would fit on an m4a3 and still be able to mount some optics on it. Anyone clue me in on the obvious?

I was also reading about magpuls. If I had a nickel for every mag I've bought in the last year or so that's given me feeding problems, well this would be crazy556kiddie.com ya know? I went to the site and I'm confused, are these not self leveling mag followers? I'd like to be able to pay 2 bucks and fix all these busted mags.

One more thing, is there anyway I can get a side mounted sling adapter for that bushy I have my heart set on? I'm referring to what a Colt 6920 has on the side rather than on the bottom of the bushy.

Thanks!

A Bushmaster is a good buy, I think you would be pleased with it. As for Back Up Iron Sights (BUIS), there are many brands that will work with a Aimpoint or other holo sight.
They are a small spring loaded sight that fits behind the optic on the A3 rail, and are locked down out of the way till needed.
Since the photos are down, here's what they look like on the Bushmaster web page:

If your optic fails, you can flip the sight up and use it through the Aimpoint without having to remove it.
If you are having feeding problems with your mags, it could be anything from bent lips on them, to weak springs, and yes possibly the followers.
Buy a couple of the followers, and see if they solve the problem, they are available on the Equipment Exchange for a couple of bucks, and are a good upgrade for old mags.
As for a front sight sling mount a la M4, Bushmaster also sells them on their web site:

Crazy, I agree with Gunslinger, the Bushmaster rifle is a good buy.  I have a Bushmaster and aside from an initial problem with an incorrectly assembled part (which, thanks to this site, I knew to be on the lookout for) it's been a kick-ass weapon.

Once you get to looking closer at the backup iron sights to go with your Aimpoint, you'll really need to go to the Optics forum here.  The regulars there know every permutation there is regarding different sight manufacturers and how to best match them with whatever mount you decide to use with your Aimpoint (which is an excellent optic!  nice choice).

HAHAHAHAAA!!!!!!!!! That's good!!! He has seen the wrath!!!!

just kiddin ya!!!

You can't go wrong with Bushmaster. I have put 6 thousand rounds through mine, and have no major (shit, or minor that i can remember) problems with it. Oh, and those 6 K rounds, most were wolf.

supposedly, it's a sin to use wolf.

It will void your warrenty though.

I hear rock river makes good rifles, but i have no personal experience with them.

colt makes good rifles, but i hate their prices.

What? Does using wolf seriously void your warranty? Everyone on here rags on Wolf bad. I have shot tons through my AK without a hitch...had planned on plinking with them once I get my AR done. Now I may not. I have never had one not fire or anything. Whats the problem with them?

Hey guys. Thanks for the warm welcome.

I appreciate all the info. I obviously didn't surf bushy's site enough. Thanks for the links to the hardware I need.

I'll start hanging out in the optics forum. I think I want an aimpoint but I'm young and impressionable :)

As far as mags go, can I get reliable USGI mags by changing to a Wolf spring and getting a magpul follower? I hate getting bent over and raped on the price of mags. I can get Bushy mags for about 20 bucks a pop but Colt mags are like $24 and I personally hate the dealer that has them. I'm just looking for alternative methods.

Thanks for the info guys.

The assembly problem with my Bushmaster was an improperly staked screw on the gas carrier key.  Several folks had mentioned their Bushies had this problem and it led to a loose carrier key screw.

Forewarned is forearmend, so I checked for a loose screw after each shoot and. 'lo and behold, it happened to me as well.  But!, I was ready for it, thanks to AR15.com, so I retightened it, staked it (and its neighbor) properly, and I've had zero problems for several thousand rounds since.
