I am looking at purchasing a Bushmaster AR and had a few questions. What is the difference between the M4 type 16 inch carbine and the standard 16 inch carbine? Are they both considered heavy barrels? Any difference in accuracy? Any differences with the rest of the rifle? Should I go with the A2 or A3 handle? When using optics with the A3, does the front sight cause problems? I know that bushmaster also has a M4 type carbine with a permanently installed Bushmaster Izzy Flash Suppressor. Any opinions on the three different types? Any help is appreciated.

M4 type is the M4 lighter profile 16 or 14.5.When they say 16 or 14.5 it could mean either unless specified.M4 profiles are about 1lb lighter than an HBAR although the newest barrel to be used on SOCCOM M4s are heavier than the old ones but a little bit lighter than HBARs even though its considered a heavy barrel. The izzy and phantom are for permanent attachment on 14.5 barrels,I like the phantom better and the A2 birdcage is for 16" barrels and does not have to be permanent. No difference in accuracy although the HBAR takes heat better and no barrel whip if it gets realy hot.The lighter profiles cool quicker and can get whip easier but like I said they cool quicker.I dont like pencil barrels..too thin for my liking but make for one hell of a light rifle. One of those on a carbon model#4 would be very light Im sure.Welcome to the site

I like that version but wasnt sure about the permanently installed Bushmaster Izzy Flash Suppressor. I dont know if I would ever want to change it though. Do you like it for the shorter barrel?

Carbines are more handy and easier to carry and move with. And with real world ranges of 100 yds and under you will have plenty of rifle.

Lumpy's choice is a good 'un. As for wanting to change the Izzy later...well...that's what buying a 2nd AR is for.

If the Izzy FH handles anything like a Phantom, you won't need to change it. I haven't tried a Izzy myself, but they look pretty close to a Phantom, and Phantom's are my favorite.

If you plan on using optics, get an A3. The front sight will show up in the field of view, but that's OK. If it really bothers you, most optic company's offer "hi-rise" mounts for their sights.

The difference in accuracy between the 16" and 14.5" barrels isn't a big deal unless you are into long distance shooting, in which case I would opt for a 20" heavy barrel.

Hope it helps.

This is no dump on lumpy, I always appreciate reading what he says, but I saw one of those (except w/ an A2 FH) right after the ban ended at a local shop, and the new Bushy stocks SUCK.  The rest of the carbine seemed to be up to snuff, but I've seen better plastic on a Tonka truck.  It just seemed to...frail, compared to others I've seen in the past.  Maybe this was a fluke, or has the quality just gone down?  I'm sure I pissed of some people, feel free to flame me if I did, I've got thick skin...    (angry people)

BUSHMASTERs are awsome!

M-4 profile bbls have a indention for mounting the m203 granade launcher and its lighter

the CAR bbl is HBAR

personally, i like the CAR bbl--less flip and more sturdy looking

I'd get the A3 since you are likely to get optics; but the A2 is just fine
the izzy fs is good
