Also, would a worn out buffer spring be cause for a malfunction where the bolt does not go fully into battery?

It could be one cause. I recently noticed one of my rifles with a CAR stock seemed to have less spring tension on it. I probably have about 10K through the rifle so I decided to buy another spring. When I compared the new and old ones, the old one was about 1 1/2" shorter than the new one.

Brownell's carries Wolff, I've always gotten all my Wolff springs from Midway...
