Ok now I know this has been discussed before but I tried the search 3x with neg results so Im gonna have a go at it....I know Im also not the only one wanting to know this with the ban ending soon...mods maybe a "how to get your AR back to its original non-nuetered specs" thread should be tacked. Cavcomp is permanantly attached to a barrel that started life as a preban. I can see a pin on the underside but other then that it looks very clean. What is the best way to take it of without screwing up my barrel? I dont care if the comp needs to be cut off...I have a nice new phantom coming that will replace it sept 13th. I have acces to all sorts of lathes , drill presses and the like, basically a whole machine shop. And my father in law is a great machinest, so Im not worried about that. Should I basically take a cut off wheel to it? |

In the absence of a machine shop, I have just used a grinding wheel to expose the side of the pin. Using a nail, I embedded the point in the pin, and pried it out. At that point, you just unscrew the comp. The above technique is still valid in the machine shop, but lathes and end mills just make it easier. Destroy the integrity of the pin and unscrew. |

The CavComp installation instructions call for drilling a shallow hole part-way into the barrel and then driving the provided roll pin (1/16" as I recall) through the comp body and into the drilled hole. No welding/soldering required. Assuming yours is installed this way, you can simply drill out the roll pin using a drill press and bit of the same diameter as the pin. The hollow center of the pin will keep the bit centralized. Once the pin has been drilled out, the comp will unscrew easily. I recently removed my CavComp in this way, and the comp even came out of the ordeal pretty much unscathed... anyone want to buy a used CavComp ? |
Welding/soldering was required for it to be a legally installed comp per BATF. If yours wasn't welded, lucky you - your uninstall will be easy and to date the BATF hasn't inspected your weapon. |
