Hello everyone, I am very new to the AR15, I just purchased a bushmaster AR 223 and I love it, I was thinking about putting a reddot on it, I dont hunt just target shot and alot of fun hip shooting! Anyway just curious if anyone uses a reddot.

Thanks Brian

Not on any of my AR's yet but when I do get one I will get a Aimpoint.  I fireda buddies AR that had one  on a flattop and I loved it.

Sure lots of guys here have aimpoints or eotechs (or cheaper BSAs, OKOs etc). There are some threads about a cheapo aimpoint knock off, I think from Hakko, called a "Tacpoint" That might be okay for bunnies and tin cans.

Oh I have an aimpoint and bushnell holosite, which is basically a low end version of a eotech. The aimpoint type scopes and surefire gun mounted lights really make a big difference in the utility of  a carbine. I used to poo poo such gizmos, I was wrong, they are large steps forward in increasing the utility of the firearm, With an aimpoint you  can accurately fire without having to precisely align the front and rear sights,

Reddots are great. If you have never used one, a fair warning, you will if you try one.

The conventional wisdom says the Aimpoint or Eotech is the best. They are also (surprise) the most expensive. I have one of the older bushnell holosites. It really depends on how much money you have to spend, and how hard of use your rifle will experience. The best deals are on the Equipment Exchange, all my money goes there.

My Vote is for Aimpoint...but consider how far out you are shooting and just how tight a group you want. If you are looking for center mass at 100 yards, a red dot optic will serve you well....if you want MOA groups at 200, then a traditional scope may be your ticket.

and alot of fun hip shooting

Fire it the right way next time!

Anyway, Aimpoint or EOtech are the best out there. The Tacpoint is an Aimpoint knockoff while the Bushnell HOLOsight is an EOtech knockoff. Heard good things about all 4, though the Tacpoint hasn't been discussed much.

I had an early Holosight for IPSC and like it a lot except it didn't get bright enough for me in bright sun. I bought the Aimpoint and it rocks. We have shot stages with 8' steel plates at 250 yards and Ihave heard some of the guys whine because it too far etc etc etc. With my un-magnafied Aimpoint ML all I have to do is place the reddot on top of the plate and the plate goes down, everytime. Last weekend a few of us were at the range and we put out clay shotgun discs at 100 yards and if I held the dot on the disc, the disc disapeared everything. I have held 1.5 ' @ 100 yards many times with the Aimpoint despite the fact that the dot is, hell I forget, but it is bigger that the groups I get, so don't think for a minute that the size of the dot is the best group you can get. IMHO the Aimpoint is well worth the money. I'll be buying another.

Bill

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that with the Aimpoint and the Eotech there is NO PARALEX ERROR!!! If you seen the dot on it, it's ass is grass, no matter of the cheek weld etc etc tec etc. Just peep and pop, not many, but only very very few dots do this, and this is worth the money to me.

You can spend $330 on an Aimpoint; about the same on an EOtech; $200 on a Bushnell Holo; buy them used at a lower price; buy a Hallo Tac-1 new for $95; or buy a BSA red dot for $30 at WalMart.

I have two Aimpoints, three Bushnell Holos and a BSA.

I am trying the Hakko Tac-1 which is similar to the Aimpoint.  Lifetime warranty.  Water proof and fog proof.  Guys who have them love them.

I am going to store my Aimpoints in the safe and use the Tac-1s for a while.

Check around and do some reading. Figure out what you want and how much you want to spend.

Buy it, and even if you don't like it you can sell it on EE and not get hurt too terribly.

Good luck.

Aimpoint ML2

First off...welcome.

I tried the BSA and on a sunny or winter day (we get a lot of snow way up north) you couldn't see the dot, it wasn't bright enough.

I then bought an Aimpoint ML2 and an Eotech 512 (the no NV model that uses AA batteries) I liked both, but ended up selling the Aimpoint and getting another Eotech. I think the Aimpoint may be better for longer more precise shots (I'm not talking scope type ranges here) but for what I wanted....20-50 yard quick aquisition, bang bang.....move to next target style shooting, I think the Eotech kicks ass. With the new Eotechs you can adjust the intensity of the reticle so you can damn near aim at the sun and still get the reticle bright enough. I really like the circle with tic style reticle of the Eotechs also.

I am very pro EOtech....can you tell

One thing.....the EOtech's reticle is kinda made up of a bunch of tiny dots of light, so it can appear "Fuzzy"......this was wierd for me at the beginning, but it seems normal now.

Also.....everyone that has shot my guns with the EOtechs mounted says..."Damn, that sight makes the gun!"
