As of tomorrow I am going out to find myself a good longgun. I have about 1 grand to spend in total, but I'd like to keep any purchases under $550-600. Accessories and things of such can come later - I am not one to blow lots of money in one day, just over a period of time.![]() Here are my options ( stock, no optics, ammo, nada... ) 1. Remington 700 ADL ( trying to find one in .308 ) 2. Remington 700 BDL ( also trying to find one in .308 ) 3. Winchester 70 Sporter LT ( trying to find it cheaper... ) 4. AR-15 ( generic ) 1&2 are no problems except for the .308 part. 3 is a bit over my one-day spending limit for now, but this can be overcome with a little searching. I need to know whether 1&2 in .308 exist. 4 is the problem, the pain in my ass and the thorn in my foot. I cannot seem to figure in all the necessary components for a 20" 1:7 chrome lined A2 ( postban, HBAR or Govt. ) within that price limit. Can an AR owner who is also a dedicated bargain hunter help me out here? I'd prefer to buy from a store, where I can see what I'm buying, but parts kits and things of such can be from the net. ![]() And lastly, I need some good funshops in the CT area that have prices that won't kill you, and good customer relations. I'll be waiting... |

The ADL comes in a .308 only with a synthetic stock from what I can find, and the BDL comes with a wood or synthetic stock in .308. I would personally go with a Savage because they are excellent guns from the factory, but if you plan on upgrading/having work done to it, probably go with the Remington. For an AR with a 20" 1x7, you can find an RRA (or a number of others') lower for under $100, and M&A has a E2 parts kit with a govt profile A2, except it is a preban kit, for $425. I hope you have with whatever you buy. |

Jnewt, I did consider Savages ( local Sports Authority had a heavy barrel one in .308 ), but I am NOT a fan of the stocks, and I don't plan to get a new stock anytime soon. Although I agree with you, they are a value for what theyare. achmeinaugen, how come I can't find the .308 BDL on Remington's website? Seems kind of strange to me. I'm not sure that M&A kits will do because the damn barrel is for a preban - I am NOT about to take a hacksaw to the muzzle to get rid of the threads ( damn CT AWB ). As for the BL, I would have no problems doing that. Phillip, I did consider buying pre-owned, but I will have to go to the shop so I can SEE and inspect what I can find. Call it a weird habit if you will - I call it safe buying. And to fill you folks in, my plan for the Remington is to have a .308 BDL with the ADL stock ( cut out for the floorplate ), and a heavier barrel. In this case, the VLS might do better, but it is something I'll have to think about. Anyone think they can get the AR cost down anymore? |

I think you should check out the 700vs. It's a short action 700 with a heavy bbl, aluminum bedding block and good synthetic stock. It lists at 800, I've seen it's big brother the sendero at gunshows in the 500-600 dollar range. I assume by saying you want the BDL in an ADL stock that you mean you want to drop the BDL into a synthetic. Don't just by an ADL stock shop around. There are different grades of Synthetic stocks and there will be one that you like for the BDL. You might want to try posting in the precision rifle forum. Number 4 is pretty easy, if you drop the buy from a store caveat. Buy a 100 dollar lower, CALL bushy, they don't list one on their site, and tell them what you want. For a plain A2 upper it'll run about 550. Get a 60 dollar part kit, and you are at about 710, which leaves 290 dollars for a stock and handguards. Or you could watch the EE and put one together from parts for a little less. |

Suprise, suprise. I wanted to drop the BDL into an ADL WALNUT stock. Sounds weird, I know, but there is a method to my madness. Let me rethink this - I want a heavy barreled .308, but with the ADL style walnut stock and the BDL floorplate. How would I best go about this? |

Can do, but it doesn't have the correct stock... I'm trying to remake an M40, you see. I'm running into all sorts of compatability issues. You think I ought to go with the ADL and rebarrel/cut out for the BDL, or just take the VLS and restock later? All this provided the stores I check have them... |
I think you should start with an M700 action from Brownells. You can part it out and stay under your daily limit, but I think in the end you'll spend more than a 1000 on it. Which Model M40 are you trying to build? I couldn't find a link for McMillon stocks, but I did find this. M40 in small arms review |
| That's the one. It doesn't have to be PERFECT ( ie., clip slot, old style bolt shroud which will replace the J-lock in the future ) - which is why I'm thinking a restocked VLS could do. I think I can keep the total cost under $800, but rifle first, optics later. Nothing fancy at all. |

Offshore, I'm considering these rifles not to hunt, but more for recreational target shooting. If I do go on a hunt for whitetail or something, the Remingtons should suffice. VLS or not, a 10lb. rifle doesn't matter much to me. As for the AR, that will end up on the highpower scene sooner or later shooting 77gr. FGMMs. I'll keep your statement in mind, simon. THanks. |
He's doing a repro M40A1. |
| I have an ADL in 308. Eventually, I will probably rebarrel and restock, but for now, its shoots excellent with my leupold VXII tactical 3-9x40 mil dot. The barrel, being a 1 in 10 twist, shoots the match ammo well. I have images of groups done with my handloads that mimics the military 175gr sniper round, if anyone could tell me how to post the things |
