I am about ready to get my first AR-15. Save for changing the grip to a Hogue, I am probably going to keep the gun as is. My inclination is to go for a Bushmaster--from what people tell me all the major guys are pretty much putting out the same gun. Would I do better with a Rock River or DPMS or...?
Anything else I need to watch out for?

Thanks!

good:

Colt--pricey, but has lifetime warranty
Bushmaster--great value and quality,  I've got one myself and love it.
RRA--great value and quality

Stay away from:

American Spirit Arms
Hesse

This is all based on info. gleaned from the forums here and firsthand experience with my Bushmaster.

Review the forums here for more info.

and welcome!

First, welcome to the board!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands: Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, RRA or DPMS but if you are just starting out then you may want to get a Bushmaster off the shelf.  It will have a chrome-lined bore and chamber and can be found at just about any local gun store.

That being said, I believe that RRA is the best deal going in ARs right now.  The quality is on par with Bushmaster and the price is a little better.  There are several dealers here on the site that will basically custom build you a RRA which means you can get the configuration that you desire the first time!

Check out ADCO Firearms or Pete in NH.  Both are highly respected and do first class work.

Again, if you are happy with an off the shelf configuration you'd do just as well to buy a Bushmaster from a local dealer.

Good luck!

What type of shooting are you planning on doing?

Looking for a carbine, or a rifle?

RRA come from the factory with the Hogue grip. Nice touch.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I didn't know that the Rock River came with Hogue. I've heard that there's a wait on them, but maybe I will. If there really isn't much difference, I'm not sure which would be better.

Right now I just want one to shoot for fun at the range and because you can't get much more politically incorrect. I also like that you can break it down for easy transport. Don't want to frighten the neighbors you know.

I always walk out side my house with my AR in plain view because my neighbors are democratic idiots and they freak out every time they see me put it in the window of my pickup. I love it.

By the way, if you are just going to get an AR that you can go blast rounds out of, then i would pick up a bushmaster or a RRA. If you would like a heavy barreled rifle then, i would say check out DPMS. Have fun and congrats!!

I know what you mean, Here in Kerry country, the soccer Moms would go ballistic if I carried anything out in plain view, AR, M1, any firearm.  I was actually very surprised after I presented the Eddie Eagle material to the Cubs Scouts, that there was not a mass exodus of parents shuffling their boys out of the Pack!

Anyways, an all around Range rifle could be a nice M4gery flat top (out to 100 yds), or a 20" flat top setup for more velocity at longer distance. Any AR you pick, I expect, will be Fun at the Range!
For my first one, I got a nice LOUD Bushy M4gery flat top with mini-Y (before Izzy brake). I used the irons for quite some time, 25-100 yds. I now have a RRA 20" Varmint upper on order.

Bushmaster and RRA are the two big values right now IMO. I will be mixing and matching for my first build; Bushmaster has a much better selection of barrels, and they are all chrome-lined and 4150 steel. However, they overcharge their other products ($184 for a stripped lower my ass!!!), so I am just buying stuff off of EE. Rock River Arms is excellent stuff for a great price, check out Adco for RRA stuff.

If I were you, I would buy a complete upper and a complete lower and put them together. Remember, you separate the upper and the lower everytime you clean the rifle anyway. Don't buy anything for the lower from Bushmaster. Check out their site and you will see why ($$). I would recommend a Stag Arms or Mega assembled lower, which are well priced and of good quality.

Have you decided what barrel length you want? If not, start thinking. Check out the AR15.com Picture thread and see what you like. The thread is going on 20 pages, so there's plenty for you to choose from. Good luck.
If you aren't addicted yet, prepare to be soon.

I would go Colt or Bushmaster.  I got a Colt back in 99 as my first rifle and I have loved it ever since.
