Do the instructors or facilities actually sell the kit they recommend?  You know, if you show up at a class with your gear and it is all wrong because you bought before you got training, can you get the real deal, correct gear on the spot and continue the training class with your newly acquired kit?  Do they send you a list of recommended gear to show up with?

What are the instructors recommending at Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, Blackwater,...?

rifle or carbine?
EOTech, Aimpoint or ACOG?
VFG or stock?
flip up BUIS or fixed?
20 or 30 rd mags?
Butt stock type?
Sling type?

When attending a training class, I recommend a Mini 14 with a D-cell Maglight duct-taped to the side of the barrel and a BSA red dot sitting on top of the Cheaper-Than-Dirt scope mount.

At the Blackwater class a number of us attended this week, the instructor said use what works for you...

Blackwater sent us a list of recommended gear.  However, they don't sell it to the GP at this time.  One of our classmates needed a new buffer spring (loooooonnnnggggggg story) and the Armorer that BW gave him a new one. I think they will help you out as much as possible...so will you classmates.

rifle or carbine? What ever you are used to.  We had at least one with a 20" and he did fine
EOTech, Aimpoint or ACOG? What ever you are used to
VFG or stock? Again, what you are used to
flip up BUIS or fixed? I prefer a fixed BUIS but either one will work
20 or 30 rd mags? take at least 1 20 rounder for sighting in if you can.  I rotated 13 30 rounders so that I didn't have to spend every break reloading
Butt stock type? again, what ever you are running now and used to will be fine
Sling type? do I even have to say it?

Check out these threads, they should help you in your gear selection:

LOL!, Einrich, you are one funny guy.  I'll wear my RED knee pads frorm my volleyball days, too.  How about my yellow Kevlar motorcycle helmet too?  I'll rope on a couple of metal trash can lids front and back as body armour.  Will that work?

What I'm used to - got it!

What I'm used to is match rifle shooting, defensive pistol shooting.  For me, it's an opportunity to buy the right stuff from the start.  What do they recommend?

I have a 16" carbine with Aimpoint ML2, LMT fixed rear BUIS, fixed front BUIS (no one likes my front sight, but it's what I've got and i am used to it).

That sounds like a great start to me.  Our BW instructor ran a post-ban Bushmaster carbine with an ARMS SIR and an Aimpoint.  Read the links above, especially the After Action Report and you'll get a great idea of our gear and our opinions of what worked and what we would like to change.
