I ordered a KAC RAS for my Bushy M16A4gery and it didn't come with any instructions. I know it goes on like a normal set of handguards, but how do you remove the panels? Also, what panels would you recommend that I get to cover up the other exposed rails not in use? It only came with enough for the rear half of the top/bottom. There is only one small heat shield at the rear of the lower handguard. Is this normally all there is? I just figured there would be more. Also there is what looks like a date on the inside of the panels of 8/98. I assume this was when they were made? I figured they would be alittle newer.

Hi coltjeeper,
The RAS panels have a clip on one end. Press the clip down then while holding the clip down move the panel to the position you wish to place it in. As far as the installation, be careful with the screw that locks the upper portion of the HG. It can break if too much force is use. You might want to use some lock-tite on the screw so that it does not back out while shooting. The heat shield should be all the way across the lower HG from front to back. As far as the date is concerned, I ordered mine Back in July 2003. The date of manufacture was 08/2003. I received it in Sept 2003. Mine also came with 3 full length panels. Which is the way most come from the factory. Hope this helps

Sounds as if you bought a M4 RAS that we (KAC) made six years ago.
Before you try to installthe upper rail section, remove the 1/8" Allen Screw from the rear clamp located at the rear of the top rail.  Make sure the clamp (the thing underneath the rail that then straddles the gas tube) hangs down freely as you install.  Then replace the screw, and as above, don't over tighten.
Also check out quarterbore.com, as there are instructions and pictures there that will help.

So I got some old shit then? Thats great! It was sealed in plastic when I got it. Like I said, the panels I got only cover the back half of the four guards. Does anyone have KAC's contact info so I can see about getting more? Also, do you think there were any changes to them over the years? Considering they are from 6 damn years ago!Coldblue, we posted at the same time. Thanks for the info. I got these off of JT Dist. I was under the impression these would be the latest versions. Should I send them back?

I just went back and checked J&T's site. This is the link I was referring to www.jtdistributing.com/ar15/knights_armament.shtml
for the M5 rail I supposedly received.

Good luck with KMC, I had a bad experience with them.  They have military contracts so they are not to concerned with us little guys.

Coldblue can correct me on this, but I believe there have been NO significant changes to the M5 RAS, so it really shouldnt matter if yours was made in 98 or 04.

Guys, thank you so much for all the responses. I started worrying I got some old stock that was out of date compared to newer production.

And yes, the 11 rib panels only cover half the rail - prepare to purchase many more if you want to cover the whole thing

bsbg,

Thanks for that info. Where can I find more of those ribs? Or is there another brand you recommend?

Keep checking the EE as Lumpy suggested.  There are some new, cheaper alternatives that look promising, from Tango Down and MagPul.  I swear I ordered some from Magpul and they never came...

They won't quite match up to your existing KAC panels, so you will either have to live with that, or sell them and replace all of them, which would probably end up costing the same .

Whats the trick to getting these ribs to move the first time? They don't want to budge and I'm pushing down on the release. Is there a trick?hem

No, you should not send them back.  The design, material, etc. remains the same since these are all built to teh same Standard US Army NSN Specification.
My comment about age was just that, no negativity involved.
In fact you may have rare stuff if our phone number is molded into the plastic handguards.
And the normal commercial "pack-out" is three 11-Rib Panels (the ones that cover about 6" of rail.)
Additional rail of various lengths are available, or you can cut yours down to accomodate your rail & accessory combo's.

Thanks coldblue. I'm satisfied that these are fine and not "outdated".  I just thought that maybe some improvements had been made that I might have missed out on. Thanks for all the info.

I liked the rubber panels that you get from Cavarms for the parts that face down, and for the other rails I like the "ladder" type.
