Could someone please post a picture of the back of a coated aluminum SP-1 CAR stock.  In particular, the back of the buffer tube with the stock retracted.

thanks

Sorry, but I don't have picture capability here yet; but maybe I can at least give you some printed word help.  What are you looking ro find out?

I bought a Colt SP1 CAR stock off of ebay.  The dimension inside the stock (where it rides on the buffer tube) is the standard colt 1.15", however, the stock has the more curved cuts where the round part of the buffer tube goes into the square (bottom) part of the buffer tube like on a non-Colt collapsible stock.

I am wondering if this stock is acutually Colt.

Also, the stock is marked "NN" inside a square under the latch that adjusts the length.

Checking my Colt metal jpb against a recent non Colt M4 type, I can't see any noticable difference in the area you're referring to; certainly not enough to show up in a photo.  Re the letters under theadjuster; that does sound like Colt.  My own stock doesn't have any the you can see, but i've always assumed that the coating was thick enough on the base to obscure the letterson the base.  Since I bought mine new in the box in 1977 (or was it 78?) never questioned the origin

Anyone got any more information?

My original Colt CAR Aluminum stocks (2 early 80's vintages) have NO markings what so ever under the latch areas.

Like shamayim said, the coatings are VERY thick (as if the stocks were dipped, not sprayed).

The markings on mine are visible under the latch.  It has some other markings on the other side.

I think Colt aluminum CAR stocks were sprayed as there is no thick coating where the buffer tube rides.  I have been reading about the processes on the internet that companies use to plastic coat stuff.

You’re probably right about the process. My post was meant to be a description. Does your e-Bay stock coating look the same (very thick on the outside, thin on the inside of the tube area?)

Yes, it is thick on the outside, thin on the inside.

Do you know the vintage (year of manufacture)? Mine are early 80's.

Also, is the buttplate knurling very "subdued" compared to say a Fiberlite plastic Colt stock (Mine are)?

The knurling is almost totally non existant on mine, because the coating is so thick. You can see it, but you really can't feel anything but a kind of wavy sensation if you run your hand over it..

I keep a rubber slip on pad on it anyway, to give a slightly longer length of pull, and to keep the coating from getting chipped off or dinged.

Shamayim, your description of the buttplate is better then mine.

Colt Sp1/Xm177 stocks are coated with vinyl acetate a black rubber like finish that was applied by a spray on finish. Colt stocks are marked with (nn) on the right side of the stock under the release lever, sometimes it's hard to see the mark as the finish can vary from thick to thin . The new replica stocks I have are not marked with the (nn) but are made by the same manufacturer.

If you need pics of stocks you can search under my screen name and see vaious pics of Sp1 and XM177 carbines I've posted over the last year.

Alright, now that my stock is actually a Colt stock, where can I get it refinished with the original coating?
