I was getting no answers in the build it yourself forum so im posting it here. When makeing a pre-ban upper post-ban compliant, do you have to shave all of the ears off of the lug, or will shaveing just the front ears be enough to satisfy the BATF? Ive heard in the past that a full 16" barrel will not accept a bayonet due to its length being too long for the bayonet to even engage the lug. If this is the case, would the lug still be illegal since a bayonet wouldnts mount to it?

You just need to shave off the side ears.

There are custom bayonets that fit a 16" barrel, so you do still need to get rid of it.

Just wait a few months.  There's no point in emasculating a perfectly good bayo stud.

BTT hopefully somone will help me here.  Im wanting to shoot this rifle at a local ar15.com members get together this coming weekend but I also dont want to assemble it till its legal. Can I just shave the front two ears off of the lug and be in good condition?

No you can't, at least not and be legal.  You still aren't allowed to have a FS, or a threaded barrel that hasn't had a brake perm installed.

Or. put anoyher way. shaving the two front ears off will make your bayo lug legal, but if the barrel came with a bayonet lug, it almost certainly came with threads for a flash suppressor also, so you'll have to either cut the threads off, or permanently mount a muzzle brake to complete your legality project

But does the 3 prong or bird cage brakes count as FS?  If so does welding them on do the trick?

Neither the bird cage nor the three prong is a muzzle brake. They are both flash suppressors, and welded or not, they're illegal on a post ban rifle.

There are a couple of muzzle brakes that look like the bird cage suppressor, though, and those, if permenently mounted, are legal.  You can tell the difference by looking at the front of the piece. If it's totally open in front it's a flash suppressor. If the front end is closed, with just a small hole for the bullet to pass thru, it's a muzzle brake, and legal, if permanently attached.

Where could I get one of these breaks?

It's "brake" not "break," and anyone of the many AR manufacturers have them.  You can order them online, but I don't think you'll have it ready for the week end.

LOL this is supposed to be a bayo lug question, not one about FS or brakes. I have already delt with the threaded part by pinning a steel adapter to the barrel and installing a mock can on the end.  I just wanted to know if by shaveing the two front ears off the lug would be kosher or do I have to totaly remove the lug or make the sides totaly flat.  From my understanding, if the two front ears are groud off a bayonet wont stay put, therefor makeing it useless. Heres a pic of it finished unless i get a diff answer  and have to remove the whole lug.

As Onslaught said in the first reply on your thread, yes - you can shave off the ears to take the bayo lug out of the legal question.  I'm not really understanding why you just don't cut the lug off completely instead of getting fancy and just taking the ears off.

However, I recommend a different course of action.  Weld a tit on the lug making it impossible to mount the bayonet.  After the AWB sunsets, just grind the tit back off and refinish and you will be good to go again without losing anything.
