What sort of cheap performance tips/tweaks do you use on your rifle?

I:
Stick skateboard tape on my magwell for grip
Stuff a compressed earplug in the gap of the trigger guard
Put an O-ring over my extractor spring
Use bike innertube to make my grips better (and secure my tape switch)

Anyone else?

Use a cheap o-ring on the front lug of your upper to remove upper-to-lower play.  Forget pricey Accu-Wedges.

  • Do the 15 minute trigger job
  • polish the feed ramps with a little 400 grit sandpaper
  • don't goop it up with too much oil, just a little on the obvious bolt points and none inside the upper
  • shoot it often so its well broken-in
  • shoot it often so you get good at it
  • shoot it often so you get your share of fun
  • USGI mags, nothing else is worth it
  • did I mention shoot it often?
  • keep spare gas rings and firing pin retaining pins, maybe extractor springs

Download the -10 and READ IT.  Follow it for cleaning & lubrication.

(BTW the -10 is in the AR15.com Books section off the Home page).

Can some one tell me why the o ring on the extractor , and show a pic of how it looks?

P.S. The gang that jumped me over the sproing was right . I shot it more and don't even notice it now .

Better extraction.  More force holding the extractor down and keeping the cartridge tight against the bolt face until the ejector pops it out.

And as DarkStar just pointed out to me, it is a #60 O-ring that should be placed over the extractor spring.

Curious.  I've never found the existing configuration to be lacking in the Extraction department.

That's only because you are a lucky bahstid!

Viton or fluorel (sp?) o-rings are heat- and oil-resistant and cheap insurance, IMHO.

My Cheap Tip?  Reverse your rear sling attachment point on A1- or A2-style fixed stocks.  You don't give up much sling length and it sure as hell doesn't snag on shit when facing backwards.

I'll also be ripping off Troy's idea of removing enough of the stock to rotate the sling attachment to the 2100 position.  (that's 9-o'clock for you civilian-types. )

While I don't do it because I really don't see the point, you can put Skateboard Tape on your brass deflector also.

Yeah, me neither.  I've had several ARs from various makers, and I've never had a single FTE.

As far as the cheap tips go, bicycle inner tube on the grip is good, so is the 15 minute trigger job.

Me neither-  Until 450 rounds or so into my first urban carbine class.   Now all my AR's have stronger springs.

When an O-ring (or D-fefender) comes apart,... you get really good at troubleshooting.

have spare parts

SA-80 mags have all worked for me, and they are stronger than aluminum.

New mags sometimes need to be broke in

Here's a couple of mine:

-A piece of loop velcro applied to your tele-stock gives a nice cheek weld especially during cold weather shooting.

-Flat-black paint on the rear of the front sight base reduces glare from the sun.

Do your handguards rattle?
Put just a dot of epoxy on each of the tabs at the front to leave a little bump. Let dry until it isn't sticky anymore, but you can still dent it with your fingernail. Now put them back on the rifle and leave them overnight. If you waited too long, you can file the dots down a bit until it fits.

Cheap telestock rattles?
put a thin strip of 100mph tape inside the stock where the tube goes, try various locations until it feels solid enough but still slides easily.

I'll shamelessly add to my own list...

You can fit a spare bolt, firing pin, and firing pin retainer in the stock pistol grip. Put em in a ziploc bag, fold, then tape it down.

Heh.  You'll have to talk to Jack as he was responsible for that semi-coherent post.

I still haven't modified that stock, though.  I need to get on that.
