The new copy of SGN has an article on the latest AR15 accessories, in which the author claims that HK WILL be selling a 16 and 20 inch version of their new piston upper to the civilian market.  I’ve owned both an AR180 and an AK47, so I understand first hand the claimed benefits of the piston driven action.  Nice as this might be to play with, I’m just wondering if anyone else is going to pass on it.  Between military and civilian life I’ve been messing about with our favorite black rifle for something like 30 years and, if nothing else, have learned to live with what some people consider to be it’s shortcomings.  Fact is, I’ve always considered the direct gas system to be pretty elegant in design, what with it’s lack of moving parts and the simplicity and weight savings that brings with it.  It’s a little dirty, no doubt about it, but I have, on more than one occasion, pumped close to a thousand rounds down range without cleaning and have yet to experience a jam.  I’ve done this with all of the AR’s I've owned.  I was on my base rifle and pistol team for a couple of years back in the 70’s and saw similar results with the issue M16’s.  So, while the rifle may require a good cleaning now and then, it’s been up to the task reliability wise just fine.  With this kind of experience under my belt, I think I probably won’t be rushing out to buy the new upper, since I feel it’s a solution to a problem I’ve never seen.  Combine this with HK’s well-deserved reputation of less than satisfactory customer service to the civilian market and I’m thinking I’ll just keep the money in the bank.  I know there’s going to be a bunch of folks jumping on this thing when it’s released and I’m not trying to talk anybody out of it.  Your money, your choice and if this thing floats your boat then buy it and enjoy the ride.  I’m just wondering if anybody else is thinking along the same lines I am.

Despite what a gun-rag author believes, multiple sources who actually work at HK have said that they aren't going to sell it to civilians.  Who to believe...?

I agree wholeheartedly and have shared the same experience with reliability.  If I had unlimited scratch I would cetainly jump- for that, as well as the complete rifle if possible.  I must admit I still might.  That is just "the sickness" kicking in however.  Without the burning desire to have something different I would think it solves a "problem" that I've never had a problem with.

If HK comes out with it, I will move mountains if I have to to get it.  HK's customer service has gotten a lot better of late.  The times I have called them for information they have bent over backwards to accommodate me.
