I've never owned an AR, but plan on buying at least two (2) when the ban sunsets (I'm confident).

Here is my issue. I like the mid-length handguard style offered by Armalite and RRA.  But I don't like the detachable forward sight on the Armalite, and I don't like the non-chrome lined barrels on the RRA.  I would also like to go with a rifle in 1 in 7 twist.

The Bushmaster series of rifles would be perfect, but Bushmaster doesn't offer rifles with mid-length handguards (or so I think, but could be wrong).  The dissipator doesn't really do it for me.

So can I get say 2 M4 style Bushmasters, and replace the furniture with mid-length handguards from say Cavalry Arms?

If so do I have to modify the barrel or the gas tube?

They will still only be Bushmasters

I don't really care about the brand, as long as the company is reputable.  I just want the setup which I described above.

You can get RRA rifles with chrome lined barrels for approximately $35 extra.

(oh Lord... I'm not going to touch that one, LOL)

As for your wuestion, the "mid-length" system is more than just furniture.  It begins with a barrel that has the hole to the bore (gas port) drilled at a location further down the barrel than the carbine (car or M4) type systems.  Then you have a longer than stock gas tube.  Then you slap on those sleek (but longer than stock mil. issue) handguards.  So basically, if you want a true mid-length system, youll have to start with a mid-length system.

hope this helps!

Ask ArmaLite for a preban, threaded, mid length barrel.  They make them, I got one, and they will make one for you.  Just don't put it together until after September 13th. ...or do what ever you want.

Edited to add put your own front site base on(with that evil fucking bayonet lug that is sure to turn you into a baby raping, liquor store robbing, president assinating criminal).

Chrome-lined mid-length is definately doable but I've never seen such a beast in 1/7" twist.  You might try some of the aftermarket barrel manufacturers.
