What is the differance between an ar-15 and an m-4?

an M4 is an AR-15/M16 variant, so all M4's are AR-15's, but not all AR's are M4's.

a true M4 has a 14.5" M4 profile 1/7" twist barrel (light under handguards with the notch in the barrel for the M203.... it also has the M4 feed ramps, a slightly higher front sight base, a telescoping stock and is usually a flattop. A true M4 is selective fire, and is made by COLT (they own the name I believe...)

now, theres lots of "M4geries" you can get or make, some that duplicate almost all (or all if you have an M16 lower) of teh M4's features.

LMT makes an upper assembly that is identical to the Colt M4's upper. mount it to any good lower with a telescoping stock and you have a rifle that is just as much an M4 as any AR not marked AR-15 is an AR-15.

The AR-15 was the full-size rifle designed by Armalite and adopted by the military as the M-16.  Civilian versions by Colt were still called AR-15's until 1994.  M4's are a modern, military carbine version of the M-16.  As JD stated, the M16 and M4 evolved from the AR-15.

Currently, any rifle that is a "clone" of any 5.56 mm AR-15  variant is generally called an AR-15 even though legally "AR-15's" can't be manufactured after 1994.  My Rock River Arms carbine is an LAR-15.
