| I should soon take delivery on a 6.5mm Grendel upper which will be mated to a Rock River lower. I want an all around use scope, to be used on three gun matches, marksmanship, varmint and perhaps some light big game shooting. I know there are better tactical choices but for what I intend, comments re the following variable magnifications; 1.5-5X, 2-7X, or 3-9X? Thanks for any imputs. Don |
| Before I posted, I checked 3 pages of the optics forum, all it talked about were things like EOTechs, ACOGS, red dots etc. Nothing against "tacical" sights but they aren't well suited to my needs. Nothing significant about conventional optics. I've now browsed all pages of the optics forum, same thing. NOTHING related to conventional variable scopes which is why I asked the simple question. HARPOON, For 3Gun, the TA11 ACOG is a popular choice. It's fast at close range because of the glowing dot and BAC, but precise enough for 400 yard shots. Low-variable power scopes are also popular. The downside of these is you have to mount them forward to accomodate the 3.5-4.5" of eye relief. Unless there is some illumination to catch your eye, their reticles can be much slower to pick-up and re-acquire when hosing closer targets. I like the TA11 enough that I put it on any rifle I want to shoot no further than say 400 yards. Beyond there, additional magnification really helps to see even 10" plates. If you are dead-set on a variable, I would definitely recommend the 1.5-5X range. Any higher and it's useless for fast close-range shooting (at its lower power) like you see in 3Gun. -z |
