On a Colt Comp Match HBAR.Besides the barrel ,is there anything else that is a little more beefed on it ,or is it pretty much standard stuff ? For an all around blaster and plinker / fun gun ,is this a pretty decent rifle to take a lickin and keep on tickin ?
If the part number does not have a "C" on it then it will be a non-compensated model. I personally like the compensator, to me it is more similar to a pre-ban ( yes I know a far cry). Overall, the rifle is no different than the MT6400C not any stronger or weaker. The real difference in only in the barrel 16" vs 20", 1/7 twist vs 1/9 twist, chrome lined vs non chrome lined. By choosing Colt the rifle will hold its value and be a good shooter for the long run. Are you getting ready to buy it or just doing research?
Actually I am researching and I am looking to buy.It will be my first AR.I was looking at used in Busmaster and Colts. I guess it all depends on what worked best for who.I will be using for general shooting/plinking. Far shots ,maybe 350 yds. or so.Now you mentioned chrome/ non chrome along with rifling twist. Is there a combination I would want or is there a combination of the 2 to stay away from? And lastly what would be a fair price in your opinion for this rifle, used in excellent shape. Also a price for a new one and where is a place to get pricing on new ones,? At the start of my post I meant in my question reguarding "beefed up" ,the MT6700 vs. Colts Std HBAR .Like maybe a better reciever ? Can I swap other uppers and lowers around with this as well? Thanks
Well I currently have a MT6400C an love it! I am a fan of Colt but you will get more opinions than you may care to field on this topic. If you stick with Armalite, Bushmaster, or Colt they will be good rifles for quality and resale. I have been doing a lot of research lately myself because I am in the market to add to my small collection of ARs. I will be buying a Colt MT6601C or MT6700C in a week or two. I have debated many nights over the non-chrome barrels (except 6400C)of the Colts. It would be a no brainer to pick the Colt if the barrel was chrome lined (longer barrel life but a little less accurate than non-chrome lined). Because of this issue alone I have been looking at the other two brands. I feel Bushmaster is good but too common, Armalite nice but not 5.56 (only .223 per Armalite customer service). My final decision I think will be the MT6601C due to the 1/7 twist (can use heavier bullets). The only thing I will be sacrificing would be the chrome lined barrel. If I go with the MT6601C I will have a 1/7 twist, 5.56, 20", HBAR. This appeals to me because the other manufacturers dont offer this twist on the barrel unless you go pre-ban and that is only on the Colt and Bushy. I have been getting the prices together on a new MT6601C and the shops in St Louis run about $960.00. You pay a premium for Colt but they are woth it in my mind. (MT6700C are about the same within $10.00 of each other). Hope this helps a little. Let me know if I left anything out.
I think you are refering to the Bushy stating .223/5.56 on the lower! This means that you cane use both calibers in the rifle. The Colts will say .223 on the lower and 5.56 on the barrel. The reason for this is that Colt likes to walk the fence. The Colt will actually shoot both. So what have you decided to go with? Just remember if the rifle can shoot 5.56 it will also shoot .223. However, if the rifle shoots .223 only you cannot shoot 5.56. The 5.56 round is loaded to higher pressures. Best to go with 5.56 if you can. Any other questions let me know.
The problem is that even the manufacturers don't always know that there's a difference, or mark the barrels correctly. (The markings on the lowers don't mean anything since you could put any upper on it, even 9mm or .22LR) This page at the Maryland AR-15 site shows that some use 5.56 chambers and mark them .223, and others use .223 chambers and mark them 5.56, so be careful.
To reply to clubster : Did I decide on what first AR yet,no.Its between a Bushmaster and a Colt.Im waiting on a reply for a used Colt 6700.It has some extra stuff to go with it.Also got my prices for Colts /Bushmaster ,if I go new.So when the person who is sellin gets back to me I'll know where I stand. As soon as I hear something Im gonna be off and runnin. I do know this ,I am also salting extra funds away for my 2004 Sunset rifle I will buy in Sept. with some evil features on it,if ya know what I mean.
