Just picked up a post-ban unfired, NIB Colt M4A3 Match Target(6400)with detatchable carry handle for $725 plus tax.  Good deal? Secondly, it has no barrel markings.  Is it 1-7 or 1-9 and does it have a chrome lined bore ?  I have four Bushmasters but this is my first Colt.

Thanks,

IF it has NO barrel markings like these, then chances are the barrel is NOT a Colt barrel.

Mr. Wilson is correct, all Colt's I've seen are all stamped with milspec markings. I have yet to see a Colt that is not chrome lined. Colt's will have T markings on the flat top upper too. Check the bolt carrier, to see if it has a "c" on it, bolt will have mpc on it too, key bolts will be staked on as well. Front sight tower will be forged, you can tell if it has what looks like a large weld about 1/8 wide like a seam. Good luck.

Have you talked to your dealer?  Some MT Colts were not chrome lined.  All Colt bbls I have seen were marked with twist.

Thanks guys,
I'll look again when I get home tonight. I did'nt have time last night to do much of an exam and did'nt pull the handguards.  This was a consignment gun at the dealer.  The lower is marked Colt Match Target .223.

This rifle?

Never heard of a new Colt with an unmarked barrel.

Is the front of the upper receiver stamped with an "M4" above the gas tube clover leaf? Is there an "F" stamped on the left side of the gas tube in the front sight base just forward of the gas tube roll pin? Is there a "4" stamped on the rear of the barrel extension at the 3 o clock position? Is there a "C" stamped on the left side of the carrier below the rear of the cam pin cut? Is the extractor stamped on the inside with a "C"? Is the bolt electro etched (often faintly) with an "MP C" or or "MPX C" where "X" can be any letter?

Here's some pics of a pre ban version, markings should be the same.

And CJan's MT6400 answer to the Colt bashers.

Somewhat proper barrel stamps, yellow arrow points to the rear of the "M203 groove" in the barrel.

Oh yeah, a forged front sight base.

Look for the "F" stamped on it.

Forged FSBs have rounded edges instead of squared ones. The surface often looks "pitted".

Notice the large raised seam created by the gap in the dies. There is a corresponding seam on the back of the FSB.

Notice the stamped "UP". Cast units will often have a raised "UP". Note that the inside of the wings are milled, cast units are not. Note the raised seam mentioned above.

Milled bayonet lug, cast units are "as cast" in this area. Notice the proper rivet retaining the front sling swivel.

Tweak,

Yes it is exactly like that rifle, including the side mount front sling swivel.  Maybe I'm getting blind in my old age and will look more closely for barrel markings when I get home tonight.

Thanks,

The 6400C does have a marked barrel, but the stamping is much lighter than other Colts so it might be harder for you to spot.

Here's a pic:

The 6400C has a chrome lined 1/7ROT barrel.

CJan,

Man, that really is light!  Guess I'll have to put on my reading glasses when I examine it tonight. Hard to do a thorough exam when sneaking a rifle into the house.  My wife just does'nt understand why I need five ARs. I've seen barrel markings on pre-ban Colt SP-1s and the lettering really jumps out at you! I did note that the box was marked 6400C.
Thanks for the info and pic.

It is a very good deal if genuine.

When you get home today, check out that barrel. I bet the markings are there.

Your going to love it. Take it out and shoot is soon. I hate when people buy a gun just for looks. To do that is such a waste of fine craftmanship. The original owner lost a little of his investment and never had the joy of shooting it.

Have fun.

Great deal, just be sure it is marked properly.

I once sold an M4 barrel to a guy on the EE.  When he got it he complained that it was not Colt, since "it didn't look like his other one".  I think he either was an idiot or his mommy found out he had just bought a $400 barrel.   Sorry for the hijack...
